Ruling on selling non-food items for food on credit

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Is it permissible to sell non-food items for food on credit, such as selling clothes for wheat, etc.?

Answer: It is permissible according to the most correct opinion of the scholars, and there is much evidence for it. Among this evidence is the generality of the texts regarding the permissibility of selling and lending, and among it is what is established in the two Sahihs from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her):
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bought food on credit from a Jew and pledged an iron armor for itأن النبي ﷺ اشترى من يهودي طعامًا نسيئة، ورهنه درعًا من حديد
. Also, there is the forward sale (salam), for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah and the people were making forward payments for fruits for one or two years, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Those who pay in advance for anything must do so for a specified measure and weight with a specified time fixed.من أسلف في شيء، فليسلف في كيل معلوم ووزن معلوم، إلى أجل معلوم
Mishkat al-Masabih 2883
. He did not stipulate that the price must be cash, which indicates that it is permissible to make a forward payment for a measured or weighed amount of food in exchange for an animal, clothes, wool, or other things that are defined by their description, provided the other conditions are met. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) knows best.
