Ruling on giving a gift to one child to the exclusion of his siblings

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Is it permissible for a father to give money or real estate to one of his children to the exclusion of the rest, given that this child benefits his father while the others do not? And what is the explanation of the father’s right over his son, and the son’s right over his father?

Answer: A father may not give a portion of his wealth to some of his children to the exclusion of others, by way of preference and favoritism; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Be afraid of Allah, and be just to your children.اتقوا الله، واعدلوا بين أولادكم
Sahih al-Bukhari 2587
. It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
However, if some of the children are in need of their father, while others are independent, then it is permissible for the father to give his obedient son, who attends to his affairs, a monthly or annual salary commensurate with his work, like that of an outside worker or less, taking into account his maintenance if the father is providing for him. There is no injustice to the other children in this, because they are the ones who distanced themselves from their father and did not fulfill his right. This is what appears to me from the pure Shari'ah, which came to secure benefits and perfect them, and to nullify harms and reduce them, and which came with the legitimacy of rewarding the one who does good for his good, and the one who does evil for his evil.
As for explaining the father’s right over his son, and the son’s right over his father, this is a matter that requires elaboration and lengthening. The scholars have written books on it, and there is in the Book and the Sunnah what indicates the principles of this, and they are the reference for everything.
The summary of this matter, in brief, is that it is obligatory for the son to be dutiful to his parents, to be kind to them, to thank them for their great work, and to listen to and obey them in what is right.
It is obligatory for the father for his son: to provide for him until he reaches maturity and is able to earn and work, or until he becomes independent of his father’s provision through inheritance, an endowment, or spending from the public treasury or from some of the benefactors. It is also obligatory for the father to guide his son and teach him what benefits him in religion and worldly affairs, and to raise him with Islamic upbringing according to his ability. The details of this matter are clear to anyone with the slightest insight and knowledge from the pure Book and Sunnah.
May Allah make me and you among those who are successful in understanding them and acting upon them; indeed, He is the best of those asked.
