The Book of Jihad, Expeditions, and Authority-07a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, and Ibn Bashar, and the wording is that of Ibn al-Muthanna. He said: Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, and Shu'bah narrated to us from Abu Ishaq, who said: I heard al-Bara' say:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was carrying earth with us on the day of the Confederates, and the earth covered the whiteness of his belly, and he was saying: "By Allah, had it not been for You, we would not have found guidance, nor would we have given in charity, nor would we have prayed. So send down upon us tranquility, for indeed those [the disbelievers] have refused us." He said: And sometimes he said: "Indeed the leaders have refused us." If they wanted to cause fitnah (trial, discord or temptation), we would refuse them, and he would raise his voice with this.
.

The Shaykh : In this is evidence of the humility of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his love for participating in jihad in the cause of Allah. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) was carrying earth with his companions while they were digging the trench. The trench is well known; it requires effort, and they were carrying the earth, and he was carrying it with them, until the earth stuck to his belly, covering the whiteness of his belly.
And in it is evidence that a person is permitted to recite verses of poetry (artajiz) while working, because this strengthens and energizes him. People used to do this in the past. For example, if you find someone driving camels, you will find him reciting songs and verses to energize himself and the camels for work. Likewise, when workers are carrying bricks to the top of a building, you will find them reciting verses. Similarly, when they want to build the roof, meaning when they throw clay on it if it cracks and water leaks through, it is called among us... you will find them singing, a song that can be heard from far away, in order to strengthen themselves.
So singing for the purpose of strengthening oneself for work is permissible. Here is the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) singing with the words of 'Amir (may Allah be pleased with him).
