The Book of Jihad, Expeditions, and Authority-08a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: 'Abd al-Malik ibn Shu'ayb ibn al-Layth narrated to us, my father Shu'ayb ibn al-Layth narrated to me, al-Layth ibn Sa'd narrated to me, Yazid ibn Abi Habib narrated to me, from Bakr ibn 'Amr, from al-Harith ibn Yazid al-Hadrami, from Ibn Hajirah al-Akbar, from Abu Dharr, who said: I said:
he asked God’s Messenger to make him a governor, but he struck him on his shoulder with his hand and said, “You are weak, Abu Dharr, and it is a trust which will be a cause of shame and regret on the day of resurrection except for him who undertakes it as it ought to be undertaken and fulfils his duty in it.”
Mishkat al-Masabih 3682
.

The Shaykh : This was how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was: he would establish the truth, be explicit about it, and not be shy of it.
Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for authority, so he struck his shoulder to make him more attentive, for when he struck his shoulder, he would pay attention. Then he said to him:
You are weak, Abu Dharr
Mishkat al-Masabih 3682
, and a condition of work is strength, because every work requires two things: strength and trustworthiness.
Indeed, the best of those you hire is the strong and trustworthy one
, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not disparage his trustworthiness, but he was weak, and authority requires a strong man, and even if he is trustworthy, he is not able to fulfill the obligation. Then he said:
And it is a trust
Allah is the Greatest! And if it is a trust, I cannot appoint you while I know that you are weak. And thus, by Allah, no one should be appointed to any work unless he is qualified for it in strength and trustworthiness, and appointing someone who is less deserving than another is a betrayal. If a person appoints someone to something while there is someone better than him in performing that thing, it is considered a betrayal.
For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It is a trust," meaning that if it is a trust, I cannot appoint you while I know that you are weak.
In this is the explicitness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and that he speaks the truth and stands by it, even if the one addressed is affected, because Abu Dharr would be affected. In it is also evidence of the trustworthiness of the Companions in transmission, because Abu Dharr transmitted this description of himself, is that not so? Yes, the trustworthiness of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) was a lesson they took from the trustworthiness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), because he was the most trustworthy of people and the strongest in that, to the extent that Allah the Exalted revealed to him verses that are the pinnacle of trustworthiness. Allah the Exalted said:
And [remember, O Muhammad], when you said to the one on whom Allah bestowed favor and you bestowed favor, "Keep your wife and fear Allah," while you concealed within yourself that which Allah is to disclose. And you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him
[Al-Ahzab 33:37]
Aisha said:
If Muhammad had concealed anything of what Allah revealed to him, he would have concealed this verse.
, and she told the truth.
The Companions studied the life of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from his words and deeds, so they were trustworthy, and they are the greatest of the generations in trustworthiness, may Allah be pleased with them.
He said:
and on the Day of judgment it is a cause of humiliation and repentance except for one who fulfils its obligations and (properly) discharges the duties attendant thereon.
Sahih Muslim 1825
Does this apply to other positions of authority besides the caliphate? It appears so, and on this basis, one fears for those who submit forged certificates through deception and bribery and the like, and then assume positions of authority based on these certificates, for they took them without right, and it will be a disgrace and a regret on the Day of Resurrection. This is one of the greatest things people are warned against: deception in everything, even in exams and the like, for they take them without right.
