Explanation of Riyad al-Salihin-49a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: He said -may Allah have mercy on him-: " And from Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
I see that you are weak, Abu Dharr, and I wish for you what I wish for myself. Do not accept rule over two people and do not become guardian of an orphan’s property.
Mishkat al-Masabih 3682
Narrated by Muslim.
And from him, he said:
he asked God’s Messenger to make him a governor, but he struck him on his shoulder with his hand and said, “You are weak, Abu Dharr, and it is a trust which will be a cause of shame and regret on the day of resurrection except for him who undertakes it as it ought to be undertaken and fulfils his duty in it.”
Mishkat al-Masabih 3682
Narrated by Muslim.
And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
You people will be keen to have the authority of ruling which will be a thing of regret for you on the Day of Resurrection
Sahih al-Bukhari 7148
Narrated by al-Bukhari "

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
Al-Hafiz al-Nawawi -may Allah have mercy on him- said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin, regarding what he transmitted from Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him): That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him)
I find that thou art weak and I like for thee what I like for myself. Do not rule over (even) two persons and do not manage the property of an orphan.
Sahih Muslim 1826
: These are four sentences in which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) made clear to Abu Dharr what he made clear. He said to him:
You are a weak man.
This statement is a direct confrontation in front of a person; there is no doubt that it is heavy on the soul, and it may have an impact when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says to you:
You are a weak man.
But the trust requires it to be this way.
