Explanation of the author's statement: "And the pommel of the sword, the ornament of the belt, and the like."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : It is permissible to adorn the pommel of the sword and the ornament of the belt. I think you can visualize the sword; it has a handle by which it is held. The pommel is at the end of the handle, and it is permissible to adorn this pommel with silver. Why? Because there are reports regarding this, some of which are marfu' (traced to the Prophet) and some are mawquf (stopping at a Companion). Also, the sword is a weapon of war, and adorning it angers the enemy. For this reason, ostentation is permitted in war, and wearing silk is permitted in war. Anything that angers the disbelievers, a person has a reward in it. Allah the Exalted said:
nor do they tread on any ground that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they inflict upon an enemy any infliction but that is registered for them as a righteous deed ولا يطؤون موطئا يغيض الكفار ولا ينالون من عدو نيلا إلا كُتِب لهم به عمل صالح
[At-Tawbah 9:120]
And He the Exalted said:
and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking bounty from Allah and [His] pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their description in the Torah. And their description in the Gospel is as a plant which produces its offshoots and strengthens them so they grow firm and stand upon their stalks, delighting the sowers
[Al-Fath 48:29]
These descriptions are for whom? For Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, and those with him
To anger thereby the disbelievers. ليغيظ به الكفار
. This indicates that angering the disbelievers is desired by Allah Mighty and Majestic, and that there is a reward in it. So, I anger the disbelievers for two reasons: to conform to what Allah desires, and secondly, for the reward, which is righteous deeds. But this does not mean that we do not call them to Islam. We do what angers them and we call them to Islam.
He says "and the ornament of the belt" because the Companions did that. The belt is what is tied around the waist. Workers in agriculture and woodcutting, and the like, use belts to tighten themselves and strengthen themselves on one hand, and to lift their garments on the other hand. So, it is permissible to adorn this belt with silver because that was reported from the Companions. This supports the position of Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) that the original ruling for adorning oneself with silver is permissibility. His statement "and the like" means the like of what was mentioned. For example, in my copy of the explanation, it says: "such as the ornament of the breastplate, the helmet, the leather boot, the shin guard, and the sword straps".

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : What? The shin guard, the shin guard. The shin guard is with a ra, and the sword straps. They said that this is like the belt, and if that was permissible in the belt based on the Companions, then this is like it. Okay, the discussion on silver is finished. What remains is: do we say it is permissible for a man to drink from a silver vessel?

The questioner : It is not permissible.

The Shaykh : Is the original ruling for it permissibility?

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : We say the original ruling for it is permissibility, but here there is an explicit text prohibiting eating and drinking from silver vessels. So, it is not permissible for a person to make a spoon from silver to drink or eat with. Okay.
Is it permissible to make a pen that has silver in it?

The questioner : There is no harm in that.

The Shaykh : We say there is no harm, on the condition that he does not use it as clothing, if we say that clothing is prohibited except for the exceptions. But if we say the original ruling is permissibility, we say there is no harm in a person making a pen whose cover is of silver, or whose case is entirely of silver, because the original ruling for it is permissibility.
