The questioner : A student in one of the Shari'ah colleges has a classmate who missed the exams due to sleeping, and sleeping is not an acceptable excuse in the college, so he advised him to bring a medical excuse so that he could take the exam and not carry this subject, knowing that carrying it causes a drop in his cumulative grade, especially since we are on the verge of graduation. However, this classmate refused on the grounds that it is cheating, lying, and contrary to the regulations. I convinced him to bring the excuse, knowing that many students do this on the basis that sleeping is an acceptable excuse. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah in your view regarding this?
The Shaykh : This suggestion from you is forbidden, and you have cheated your companion and led him into ruin. But by the grace of Allah, he did not accept it from you, and congratulations to him for rejecting this forbidden suggestion. It is obligatory for a person to be truthful, clear, and frank so that he may be blessed in his work. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1532a That is, the seller and the buyer have the option as long as they remain in the assembly. If they tell the truth and make things clear, they will be blessed in their sale. If they lie and conceal, the blessing of their sale will be wiped out.
So it is obligatory for students to be frank and speak the truth, whether it is against them or in their favor, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:[An-Nisa 4:135].
And beware, O brother, of doing such a thing. Rather, it was your duty to forbid the one who intended to do so, lest he fall into cheating, lying, and deception.
