Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in what he quoted from al-Nu'as ibn Sim'an (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said:Sahih al-Bukhari 6491 : The writing of evil deeds and good deeds includes two meanings: The first meaning: The writing of that in the Preserved Tablet, for Allah the Exalted has written in the Preserved Tablet everything, as He the Exalted said: [Al-Qamar 54:49] , and He the Exalted said: [Al-Qamar 54:53] So Allah the Exalted has written the good deeds and the evil deeds in the Preserved Tablet, and then He writes them afterwards when the servant performs them. When the servant performs them, Allah the Exalted writes them according to what His wisdom requires, and according to what His justice and His favor require. So these are two writings: a prior writing that no one knows except Allah Mighty and Majestic, so none of us knows what Allah has written for him of good or evil until that thing happens, and a subsequent writing when the person performs the deed, it is written for him according to what wisdom, justice, and favor require.
: This means that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained that, how does He write? So he explained that when a person intends a good deed but does not do it, Allah the Exalted writes it for him as a complete good deed. An example of that is: a man intended to perform ablution to read the Qur'an, then he did not do that, he turned away from it, so a complete good deed is written for him for that. He intended to give charity and specified the money he wanted to give as charity, then he held back and did not give charity, so a complete good deed is written for him for that. He intended to pray two units of prayer, then he held back and did not pray, so a complete good deed is written for him for that. If someone asks: How is a good deed written for him when he did not do it? The answer to that is to say: The favor of Allah is vast. The favor of Allah is vast. This intention that occurred from him, this intention that occurred from him is considered a good deed, because the heart is always intending either good or evil. So if he intends good, this is a good deed that is written for him. If he does it, Allah the Exalted writes it for him as ten good deeds up to seven hundred times or a greater multiple. When he does the good deed that he intended, he is written what was mentioned: ten good deeds up to seven hundred times or a greater multiple. And this variation is based on something, it is based on sincerity and following. So the more sincere a person is to Allah in his worship, the more his reward is. And the more a person follows the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in his worship, the more perfect his worship is, and the more his reward is. So this variation is according to sincerity and following, according to sincerity to Allah and following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
As for the evil deed, he said:Sahih Muslim 131a : Like a man who intended to steal but remembered Allah Mighty and Majestic, so the fear of Allah overtook him, so he left the theft, so a complete good deed is written for him for that. A complete good deed because he left doing the sin for the sake of Allah, so he was rewarded for that. As this came explained in another wording, he said: meaning: for My sake. He intended to do a wrong, like backbiting for example. He intended to backbite someone and speak about his honor, but he remembered that this is forbidden, so he left it. He left it for the sake of Allah, so he is given a complete good deed for that. If he does the evil deed, only one evil deed is written, it does not increase, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-An'am 6:160] .
This hadith, as you heard, contains evidence for the consideration of intention, and that intention may lead its owner to good. And it has come before us that if a person intends evil and does the deed that leads to evil but he is unable to do it, the sin of the doer is written upon him. As mentioned before regarding two Muslims who met with their swords: , and Allah is the One who grants success.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in what he quoted from al-Nu'as ibn Sim'an (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said:
Allah ordered (the appointed angels over you) that the good and the bad deeds be written, and He then showed (the way) how (to write).
Indeed, all things We created with predestination.
And every small and great [thing] is inscribed.
Then He explained that
As for the evil deed, he said:
But it he intended evil, but did not commit it, Allah wrote down full one good in his favour.
Because he abandoned it because of Me.
Whoever comes [on the Day of Judgement] with a good deed will have ten times the like thereof [to his credit], and whoever comes with an evil deed will not be recompensed except the like thereof; and they will not be wronged.
This hadith, as you heard, contains evidence for the consideration of intention, and that intention may lead its owner to good. And it has come before us that if a person intends evil and does the deed that leads to evil but he is unable to do it, the sin of the doer is written upon him.
