Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in what he quoted from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), the servant of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in al-Madinah, his mother brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said to him:
This is Anas ibn Malik serving you, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted that, and Anas became one of the servants of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant when he repents to Him than this man is who fell from his mount after having lost it.
. He related the story: A man was in a desert, with no one around him, no water, no food, and no people. His camel was lost, meaning the camel was lost. He kept looking for it but did not find it. He went to a tree and slept under it, waiting for death. He had despaired of his camel and despaired of his life, because his food and drink were on his camel and the camel was lost. While he was thus, his she-camel was beside him, its reins caught on the tree under which he was sleeping. What do you estimate this joy to be? No one can imagine this joy except one who has experienced such a situation, because it is a great joy, a joy of life after death. For this reason, he took the reins and said:
0 Lord, Thou art my servant and I am Thine Lord
Sahih Muslim 2747a
. He intended to praise Allah and say: “O Allah, You are my Lord and I am Your slave,” but out of the intensity of his joy, he made a mistake and reversed the statement, saying:
0 Lord, Thou art my servant and I am Thine Lord
Sahih Muslim 2747a
. In this hadith is evidence of the joy of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in the repentance of His servant when he repents to Him, and that He loves that (Glorified and Exalted is He) with a great love. But this is because of His need for our deeds and our repentance. Allah is rich in Himself and has no need of us, but out of His love (Glorified and Exalted is He) for generosity, He loves (Glorified and Exalted is He) to pardon and forgive more than He loves to take revenge and punish. For this reason, He rejoices in the repentance of the human being. In this hadith is an encouragement to repent, because Allah loves it, and it is in the interest of the servant. In it is also the affirmation of joy for Allah (Mighty and Majestic). He (Glorified and Exalted is He) rejoices, becomes angry, dislikes, and loves, but these attributes are not like our attributes, because Allah says:
There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
[Ash-Shuraa 42:11]
. Rather, it is a joy befitting His greatness and majesty, and it does not resemble the joy of the created beings, nor does it resemble the joy of the created beings.
In it is also evidence that if a person makes a mistake in one of the statements, even if it is disbelief, and his tongue slips into it, he is not held accountable for it. This man said a word of disbelief, because for a person to say to his Lord: “You are my slave and I am Your Lord,” this is undoubtedly disbelief. But because this came from a mistake out of the intensity of joy, he made a mistake and did not know how to speak, so he was not held accountable for it. If a person makes a mistake in a word, a word of disbelief, he is not held accountable for it. Likewise, other words, if he insults someone by mistake without intention, or divorces his wife by mistake without intention, or frees his slave by mistake without intention, none of this has any consequence, because the person did not intend it, so it is like the slip of the tongue in an oath. And Allah the Exalted said:
Allah does not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He imposes blame upon you for what your hearts have earned
[Al-Baqarah 2:225]
. This is unlike the mocker, for the mocker becomes a disbeliever if he says a word of disbelief, even if he is mocking, because of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(65) And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?" (66) Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you - We will punish another faction because they were criminals.
[At-Tawbah 9:65-66]
. The mocker intended the speech and intended its meaning, but by way of mockery and jest. Therefore, he became a disbeliever. This is unlike the person who did not intend it, for his statement is not considered to be anything. This is from the mercy of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). And success is from Allah.
