A woman performed istikharah for something and then had a disturbing dream; is this the result of the istikharah, or are the results of istikharah known in other ways?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Did you perform istikharah?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Is it a legitimate istikharah, if Allah wills?

The questioner : Yes, if Allah wills.

The Shaykh: All right.

The questioner : Regarding a person who wants to propose marriage.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : But I was upset by a dream; I did not dream the dream that my sister had.

The Shaykh : Who told you that you have to dream?

The questioner : It is supposed to be like that, because it has happened more than once and I did not dream.

The Shaykh : Who told you that dreaming is a condition?

The questioner : What is the condition?

The Shaykh : Yes, and that is why I asked you: did you perform a legitimate istikharah? You told me yes.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : So now I want to understand from you what the istikharah you performed looked like?

The questioner : After the 'Isha' prayer, I prayed two rak'ahs, then I sat and recited the dhikr.

The Shaykh : That is enough. Do not associate sleep and dreams with istikharah.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Listen, what did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : The hadith is narrated by Imam al-Bukhari in his Sahih from the hadith of Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah al-Ansari, who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us istikharah in all matters, just as he taught us a surah from the Qur'an." He said:
If anyone of you is deliberating about a decision he has to make, then let him pray two Rak’ah of non- obligatory prayer, then say: Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi ‘ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika إذا هَمَّ أحدكم بالأمر فليصلِّ لله ركعتين من غير الفريضة ، ثم ليقُلْ اللهم إني أستخيرك بعلمك وأستقدرك بقدرتك ...
Sunan Ibn Majah 1383Sahih (Darussalam)
to the end of the supplication. And perhaps your supplication was not exactly like that?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Good. So the point is that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded istikharah, he did not command the one seeking guidance to do more than pray two rak'ahs other than the obligatory prayer, and then recite this supplication.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : And that is all. This means that the one seeking guidance, whether the istikharah is for marriage, travel, partnership, trade, or anything else, if Allah (Mighty and Majestic) knows that the matter for which he is seeking guidance is good, He will make it easy for him; otherwise, He will obstruct it for him.

The questioner : Yes, yes.

The Shaykh : So now, put your mind at ease. Do not think that you will see a dream and see green, white, black, or whatever else. All of this is talk for which Allah has not sent down any authority. Is that clear?

The questioner : Is that clear?

The Shaykh: All right.

The questioner : Thank you very much.

The Shaykh : Peace be upon you. Welcome.
The student : May Allah reward you with good. May Allah greet you.

The Shaykh : May Allah bless you.

The questioner : If Allah wills, there was no confusion in the matter, our Shaykh? There was confusion.
