Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then Jibril said
Inform me about the Hour
meaning regarding the Hour in which people will be resurrected and recompensed for their deeds. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said
The one who is asked knows no more than the one who asks
Mishkat al-Masabih 741
This means that if you, O Jibril, do not know it, then I likewise do not know it. So these are two noble messengers, one a messenger from the angels and the other a messenger from the humans. And they are the most perfect of messengers. The most perfect of the angelic messengers is Jibril, and the most perfect of the human messengers is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). And yet, each of them denies having knowledge of the Hour, because the knowledge of the Hour is with the One in Whose hand is its establishment, Mighty and Majestic, and He is Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), as He said in multiple verses
People ask you concerning the Hour. Say," Knowledge of it is only with Allah يسألونك عن الساعة قل إنما علمها عند الله
[Al-Ahzab 33:63]
People ask you concerning the Hour. Say," Knowledge of it is only with Allah. يسألك الناس عن الساعة قل إنما علمها عند الله
[Al-Ahzab 33:63]
in multiple verses. So its knowledge is with Allah. Whoever claims knowledge of the Hour is a liar. And how could he know it, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) does not know it and Jibril does not know it, and they are the best of messengers? But the Hour has signs, as Allah said
Then do they await except that the Hour should come upon them unexpectedly? But already there have come [some of] its indications
[Muhammad 47:18]
its signs. So when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed Jibril that he had no knowledge of it, he said
Then inform me about its signs
its sign indicating its nearness. So he said
That the slave woman gives birth to her master, and that the naked, poor, and bare-footed shepherds rival each other in the height of the buildings
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2610Sahih (Darussalam)
The first is that a slave woman gives birth to her mistress, meaning that the enslaved slave woman will reach a state where she becomes the mistress of other slaves. This is an allusion to the abundance of wealth. And likewise the second
and that the naked, poor, and bare-footed shepherds rival each other in the height of the buildings
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2610Sahih (Darussalam)
They compete in the construction of buildings in reality by raising their buildings to the sky, and they compete in them in meaning by beautifying them and decorating them and adding to them all that is needed to complete them, because they have an abundance of money. All of this has happened. All of this has happened. And there are other signs and other indicators mentioned by the scholars in the chapter of battles, trials, and the signs of the Hour, and they are many. Then Jibril (peace and blessings be upon him) departed, and they remained as long as Allah willed for them to remain. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to 'Umar
Umar, do you know who this inquirer was? I replied: Allah and His Apostle knows best. He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: He was Gabriel (the angel). He came to you in order to instruct you in matters of religion.
Sahih Muslim 8a

And in this hadith is the practice of posing questions to students to test them, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) posed the question to 'Umar.
And in it is also the permissibility for a person to say "Allah and His Messenger know best", and it is not obligatory for him to say "Allah, then His Messenger," because the knowledge of the Shari'ah that reaches the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is from the knowledge of Allah. So the knowledge of the Messenger is from the knowledge of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). So it is correct to say "Allah and His Messenger know best", as Allah the Exalted said
If only they had been satisfied with what Allah and His Messenger gave them
[At-Tawbah 9:59]
So he said
what Allah and His Messenger have given them
and did not say "then His Messenger," because the giving here is a Shari'ah giving, and the Shari'ah giving of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is from the giving of Allah. So in matters of the Shari'ah, it is permissible for you to say "Allah and His Messenger" without "then." But in worldly matters, such as will and the like, do not say "Allah and His Messenger"; say "Allah, then His Messenger." And for this reason, when a man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) "What Allah wills and what you will", he said
Have you made me a rival to Allah? Rather, it is what Allah alone wills.
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 18:1391

And in this is also proof that if a questioner asks about something he knows, in order for those present to benefit, then he becomes a teacher for them. Because the one who answered the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Jibril was a questioner who did not teach the people, but he was the cause of this answer from which the people benefited. Some of the scholars said that it is necessary for a student of knowledge, when he sits with a scholar in a gathering, to ask about the issues that concern those present, even if he knows their ruling, in order to benefit those present and be a teacher for them.
And in this is proof of the blessing of knowledge, and that knowledge is beneficial to both the questioner and the answerer, as he said here
He teaches you your religion

And in this is also proof in the hadith that it is a great hadith that encompasses the entire religion. And for this reason he said "to teach you your religion," because it encompasses the foundations of beliefs and the foundations of actions. The foundations of beliefs are faith in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and the divine decree, its good and its evil. And the foundations of actions are the five pillars of Islam. And may Allah grant success.
