Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: From Abu Dharr, Jundub ibn Junadah, and Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Have Taqwa of Allah wherever you are, and follow an evil deed with a good one to wipe it out, and treat the people with good behavior.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1987Hasan (Darussalam)
This hadith is among the Forty Hadith of al-Nawawi by the author (may Allah have mercy on him). In it, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave three great advices:
The first advice is:
Have Taqwa of Allah wherever you are
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1987Hasan (Darussalam)
Fear of Allah is avoiding prohibitions and doing what is commanded. This fear of Allah is that you do what Allah has commanded you, with sincerity to Allah and following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and that you leave what Allah has forbidden, in obedience to the prohibition of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and keeping away from the prohibitions of Allah.
An example of this is that you perform what Allah has made obligatory upon you in the greatest pillar of Islam after the testimonies of faith, which is prayer. You perform it completely with its conditions, pillars, and obligations, and you complete it with the things that make it perfect. Whoever neglects any of the conditions, obligations, or pillars of prayer has not feared Allah; rather, his fear of Allah has decreased by the amount he neglected by leaving what Allah commanded him to do in his prayer.
In zakah, fearing Allah is that you count all your wealth that is subject to zakah and pay its zakah with a willing heart, without stinginess, miserliness, or delay. Whoever does not do this has not feared Allah.
In fasting, you fast as you were commanded, avoiding in it idle talk, obscenity, noise, backbiting, talebearing, and other things that diminish the fast and remove the spirit of fasting and its true meaning, which is fasting from what Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has forbidden.
And so with the rest of the obligations, you perform them in obedience to Allah, in compliance with His command, with sincerity to Him and following His Messenger. And likewise, regarding prohibitions, you leave what Allah has forbidden, in compliance with the prohibition of Allah (Mighty and Majestic); where He has prohibited, you stop.
The second is:
and follow an evil deed with a good one to wipe it out
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1987Hasan (Darussalam)
Meaning, if you do a bad deed, follow it up with a good deed, for good deeds wipe out bad deeds. Among the good deeds after a bad deed is that you repent to Allah from the bad deeds, for repentance is among the best of good deeds, as Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves." إن الله يحب التوابين ويحب المتطهرين
[Al-Baqarah 2:222]
And He the Exalted said:
And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
[An-Nur 24:31]
And likewise, righteous deeds expiate bad deeds, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The five [daily] prayers, Friday to Friday and Ramadan to Ramadan make atonement for what has happened since the previous one when major sins have been avoided
Mishkat al-Masabih 564
And he said:
An Umra is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the next
Sahih Muslim 1349a
So good deeds wipe out
bad deeds. The third is:
and treat the people with good behavior
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1987Hasan (Darussalam)
This is done with a pleasant face, truthful speech, good conversation, and other good morals. Many texts have come regarding the virtue of good character, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The most perfect believer in respect of faith is he who is best of them in manners.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4682Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
And he informed:
The people closest to me (peace and blessings be upon him) and nearest to me in rank on the Day of Resurrection are those among you who are best in character
So good morals, in addition to being a good path in society and making their owner beloved to people, carry a great reward that a person attains on the Day of Resurrection. So preserve these three advices from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Have Taqwa of Allah wherever you are, and follow an evil deed with a good one to wipe it out, and treat the people with good behavior.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1987Hasan (Darussalam)
And success is from Allah.
