Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on good character: "From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the thing that most often causes people to enter Paradise? He said: Fear of Allah and good character. And he was asked about the thing that most often causes people to enter the Fire? He said: The mouth and the private parts.
Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: It is a good, authentic hadith.
And from him (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The most complete of the believers in faith, is the one with the best character among them. And the best of you are those who are best to your women.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1162
Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: It is a good, authentic hadith.
And from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), she said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Indeed, the believer reaches, by his good character, the level of the one who fasts and prays at night.
Abu Dawud narrated it.
And from Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I guarantee a house in the surroundings of Paradise for a man who avoids quarrelling even if he were in the right, a house in the middle of Paradise for a man who avoids lying even if he were joking, and a house in the upper part of Paradise for a man who made his character good.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4800
It is an authentic hadith, narrated by Abu Dawud with an authentic chain of narration"
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
These hadiths explain the virtue of good character. Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned them in *Riyad al-Salihin* in the chapter on good character. Among them is the hadith from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him):
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: What is the thing that most often enters Paradise?
: meaning what is the thing that is the cause for many people to enter Paradise,
so he said: "Taqwa of Allah, and good character."
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2004
: Fear of Allah the Exalted is a comprehensive term for doing what He commanded and leaving what He prohibited. This is taqwa: that you do what Allah commanded you to do and leave what He prohibited you from doing. This is because taqwa is derived from protection, which is: that a person takes what protects him from the punishment of Allah. And nothing protects from the punishment of Allah except doing the commands and avoiding the prohibitions. And the thing that most often causes people to enter the Fire is: the mouth and the private parts. The mouth: by this is meant the speech of the tongue, for a person may say a word without giving it a thought, and thereby he plunges into the Fire for seventy autumns, and I seek refuge in Allah, seventy years. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Mu'adh ibn Jabal:
Then he asked, "Shall I tell you of that which holds all these things?" I said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." So he took hold of his tongue and said, "Keep this in control." I asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Shall we really be accounted for what we talk about?"
Riyad as-Salihin 1522
meaning are we to be held accountable for our speech?
May your mother mourn you, O Ma'adh! What will throw people into the Fire on their faces—or he said—on their snouts, except the harvest of their tongues? And because the work of the tongue is easy, its release became easy, for speech does not tire a person, unlike the work of the hand, the work of the leg, or the work of the eye, which tires a person. No, the tongue does not tire, so you find a person speaking a great deal of things that harm him, such as backbiting, talebearing, cursing, and insulting, without him realizing it, and thus he acquires many sins. As for the private parts, the meaning is unlawful sexual intercourse, and worse than that is sodomy, for the soul also calls to that often, especially among the youth. A person falls into the matter and his soul gradually leads him until he commits the great sin without knowing it. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) closed every door that could be a cause for this great sin. He forbade a man to be alone with a woman, and he forbade a woman to uncover her face before foreign men, and he forbade a woman to soften her speech so that the one in whose heart is a disease might be tempted, among other strong barriers that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed as a barrier against committing this great sin, for the soul calls to this great sin. So this is what most often throws people into the Fire: the deeds of the heart, the deeds of the tongue, and the deeds of the private parts. We ask Allah for protection. Then he also mentioned from the virtues of good character: that the best of people in character are the most perfect in faith. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most perfect of people in faith are the best of them in character." And in this is evidence that faith varies in degree, and that people differ in it; some are more perfect in faith than others based on their deeds, and the better a person's character, the more perfect his faith. This is a clear exhortation that a person should be of good character to the extent he is able. And success is from Allah. The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on good character: "It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The most perfect of the believers in faith are the best of them in character, and the best of you are the best of you to their wives.' Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: 'A good, authentic hadith.'"
