The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The chapter on reflecting upon the greatness of the creations of Allah the Glorious and Exalted, and upon the conditions of this world and the Hereafter, and on directing the self toward righteousness" Reflection is when a person engages his mind in a matter until he reaches a conclusion in it. Allah the Exalted has commanded it, meaning reflection, and encouraged it in His Book because of the high objectives, faith, and certainty that a person attains through it.
Allah the Exalted said:[Saba 34:46] If you stand by it, you will attain the objective and be saved from what is feared. What is it? [Saba 34:46] "That you stand for Allah," meaning that you are sincere to Him, standing in obedience to Allah the Glorious and Exalted in the manner He has commanded you, being sincere to Him. Then, after that, you reflect. If you do that, this is an admonition, and what an admonition it is! In this verse is an indication that it is incumbent upon a person, when he stands for Allah with an action, to reflect on what he did in this action: Did he perform it in the required manner? Did he fall short? Did he add to it? What did he gain from this action in terms of the purification of the heart and the refinement of the self, and so on? Let him not be like the one who performs his righteous deeds as if they are habits he does every day. Rather, reflect, my brother, reflect on what has happened to you from this worship: What effect has it had on your heart? On your righteousness? Let us give an example of this with prayer. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said: And He said: [Al-'Ankabut 29:45] So let us reflect: Do we, when we pray, increase in energy, strength, and vitality for righteous deeds, so that prayer becomes a support for us? Let us look at reality: this does not happen except rarely, rarely in terms of the individual himself, and rarely in terms of the people in general. So look at what has happened to you from prayer: Has it become a support for you in the obedience of Allah, in calamities, and in other things? As is mentioned regarding the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that when a matter distressed him, he turned to prayer, meaning when something worried and troubled him, he turned to prayer, (peace and blessings be upon him).
Likewise, Allah the Exalted said:[Al-'Ankabut 29:45] Reflect: When you pray, do you find in yourself a hatred for obscenity, a hatred for what is wrong, a hatred for sins? Or does prayer not benefit you in this? If you know these matters, you will know the results of righteous deeds, and you will be admonished by what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) admonished you with: [Saba 34:46] Another example is in zakah. Zakah is the obligatory wealth in zakatable assets that a person distributes to the categories that Allah has commanded. Allah has clarified its benefits, so He said to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him): [At-Tawbah 9:103] So when you have paid your zakah, look: Has this zakah purified you from vile character traits? Has it purified you from sins? Has it purified your wealth? Has it purified your self? Look, many people pay zakah as if it is a loss, as if it is a debt they are paying while they hate it, may Allah spare us. They pay it without realizing that it purifies them or that it purifies their selves. And so it is with the rest of the deeds: Stand for Allah, then reflect on what has happened. This is a great admonition; if a person is admonished by it, it will benefit him and rectify his conditions. We ask Allah to rectify our deeds and conditions and yours.
