The Shaykh : This style is called al-Ihtirās (caution) by rhetoricians. It is when a person speaks in a way that suggests a meaning he does not intend, and then he adds a sentence that clarifies that he intends this meaning. An example of this in the Qur'an is the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
Not equal among you are those who spent before the conquest [of Makkah] and fought [and those who did so after it]. Those are greater in degree than they who spent afterwards and fought. But to all Allah has promised the best [reward]
Because His saying
Those are greater in degree than they who spent afterwards and fought
[Al-Hadid 57:10]
suggests that the others have no share in this, He said:
And to both Allah has promised the best [reward]
[An-Nisa 4:95]
And from that is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(78) And [mention] David and Solomon, when they judged concerning the field - when the sheep of a people overran it [at night], and We were witness to their judgement. (79) And We gave understanding of the case to Solomon
[Al-Anbya 21:78-79]
Because this suggests that Dawud had a deficiency, He said:
and to each [of them] We gave judgement and knowledge
[Al-Anbya 21:79]
And from that is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen, [who strive and fight] in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred the mujahideen through their wealth and their lives over those who remain [behind], by degrees. And to both Allah has promised the best [reward]
Here, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
And in every good
Not the strong believer and not the weak believer, but the strong one is better and more beloved to Allah.
