Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The author mentioned in the chapter on encouraging adherence to the Sunnah and its etiquettes, this incident that occurred during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), where a group of people had their house burn down at night. This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said:
Fire is your enemy
Riyad as-Salihin 1653
meaning
So when you go to sleep, extinguish it
This fire which Allah (Mighty and Majestic) created and brought forth its tree, Allah bestowed it upon His servants as a blessing. So the Most High said:
(71) And have you seen the fire that you ignite? (72) Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer?
[Al-Waqi'ah 56:71-72]
And the answer is: No, rather You, O our Lord, are the One who brought it forth.
We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers,
[Al-Waqi'ah 56:73]
It is a reminder by which a person remembers the Fire of Hell, for this fire is one part of sixty parts of the Fire of Hell. All the fire of this world, whether intense in heat or mild, is all one part of sixty parts of the Fire of Hell. May Allah protect me and you from it. He made it a reminder such that some of the Salaf, when they were about to commit a sin, would go to the fire and place their finger on it, meaning he would say to himself: Remember this heat, do not expose yourself to sin, for that is a cause for entering the Fire. We ask Allah for safety. And with this, he said:
and a provision for travelers.
meaning We made it a provision for travelers and others who need it, so they enjoy it, they use it to ward off the cold in winter, they heat their water with it, they cook their food with it. So it is a benefit, but it can also be harmful, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in this hadith:
Fire is your enemy
Riyad as-Salihin 1653
So it is an enemy if a person does not properly control and restrain it; it becomes an enemy if he is negligent with it or transgresses. He is negligent if he does not contain what could be a cause for it to ignite, or if he does not contain what could be a cause for its ignition. Or he transgresses if he lights it around things that ignite quickly, such as gasoline, gas, and the like. Then it becomes an enemy to the person. In this is evidence that a person should take precautions in matters whose evil he fears. For this reason, a person is commanded to extinguish the fire when sleeping, and not to say, “This is easy, I am safe.” Perhaps he may hold this assumption, but what he does not expect may happen. Also included in this, in our present era, are gas valves. A person must check them so that there is no leakage, which would fill the air with gas, and if the fire is lit, the entire place would burn. Also included in this are electrical fuses. A person should be careful with them and check them, and the one who arranges them should be a knowledgeable person, an engineer, so that they are not installed incorrectly, resulting in burning, either a complete burning of the entire house or a part of it. The important thing is that a person must guard against everything whose harm he fears. And if this is the case with the fire of this world, then likewise he must guard against what is a cause for the punishment of the Fire in the Hereafter, from the causes of sins, their means, and their paths. For this reason, the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) said: The means have the rulings of the objectives, and the paths must be blocked if they are a path to what is forbidden, out of fear of falling into destruction. And Allah grants success.
