The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The Chapter on the Command to Fulfill Trusts." The term *amanah* (trust) is used for multiple meanings, among which is: what Allah entrusted to His servants in the form of the acts of worship He obligated them to perform, for these are a trust that Allah entrusted to the servants. Among them is: financial trust, which is the deposits given to a person to keep safe for their owners, as well as other monies that are in a person's possession for his benefit or the benefit of the owner. This is because the trust in a person's possession is either for his benefit, or for his benefit and the benefit of the owner, or for the benefit of the owner, or for the benefit of the one in whose possession it is, or for the benefit of both of them.
As for the first, the deposit: you place it with a person, saying for example: "This is my watch with you, keep it safe for me," or "These are dirhams, keep them safe for me," or something similar. This is a deposit, and it remains with the holder for the benefit of the owner.
[An-Nisa 4:58] Consider this formulation. [Al-Baqarah 2:67] It is a formulation of power and authority. He did not say: "Fulfill the trust," nor did He say: "I command you." [Al-Baqarah 2:67] Meaning: By His great divinity, He commands you to fulfill the trusts to their owners. So He raised the pronoun, placing the address in the place of the absent, in order to magnify this status and this command. [Al-Baqarah 2:67] This is like the statement of a sultan, and to Allah belongs the highest example: "The prince commands you," or "The king commands you." This is more eloquent than saying: "I command you," as the scholars of rhetoric have said. [An-Nisa 4:58] The command to fulfill them to their owners necessitates the command to preserve them, because it is not possible to fulfill them to their owners except by preserving them. And preserving them means not transgressing in them and not being negligent, but preserving them completely, without transgression or negligence, until he fulfills them to their owners. Fulfilling the trust is one of the signs of faith. So whenever you find a person to be trustworthy in what he is entrusted with, fulfilling it in the best manner, know that his faith is strong. And whenever you find him to be a traitor, know that his faith is weak. Among the trusts is: what is between a man and his companion in the form of private matters that he does not like anyone to know about. So it is not permissible for his companion to disclose them. If you entrusted me with a story you told me and said: "This is a trust," then it is not permissible for you to tell anyone about it, even if it is the closest person to you. And whether you instructed me not to tell anyone, or it is known from the circumstances that I do not like anyone to know about it. For this reason, the scholars said: If a man tells you a story and then turns away, this is a trust. Why? Because his turning away indicates that he fears someone might hear, so he does not like anyone to know about it. So if a person entrusts you with a story, it is not permissible for you to disclose it. And among this is also: what is between a man and his wife in the form of private matters. Indeed, the worst of people in status before Allah the Exalted on the Day of Resurrection is the man who has intercourse with his wife and she with him, and then he talks about what happened between them. So it is not permissible for a person to talk about what happened between him and his wife. For example, many of the foolish young men are found joking in gatherings and making light of things, with one of them saying: "I did such and such to my wife, and I did such and such to my wife," regarding matters that she does not like anyone to know about. And likewise, every sane person with good taste does not like anyone to know about what happened between him and his wife. So it is upon us to preserve trusts. First, we must preserve the trusts between us and our Lord, because the right of our Lord is the greatest of rights upon us. Then, after that, what is of the rights of creation, the first being the first. And Allah is the One who grants success.
