Question:
With the blessing of Allah, we begin this session with a message received from the questioner Ibrahim Abu Hamid. He says in this question: What is the trust mentioned in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Indeed, we offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains
[Al-Ahzab: 72]? We ask for your guidance?

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon His Messenger, upon his family, and upon his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
The scholars have clarified in their books of tafsir that this trust is the religion of Islam. It is what Allah has prescribed for His servants of obligatory duties and prohibitions. It is obligatory for those who are accountable to perform the obligatory duties and avoid the prohibitions, and this is a trust. He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:
Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due
[An-Nisa: 58]. And He the Exalted said:
And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive
[Al-Mu'minun: 8]. And He the Sublime said:
O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].
[Al-Anfal: 27]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed, we offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant.
[Al-Ahzab: 72]. So it is what Allah has made obligatory upon us of tawhid (the oneness of Allah), which is the foundation of the religion, and the sincerity of worship to Allah alone.
And likewise, what Allah has made obligatory upon us of following the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and believing that he is the Messenger of Allah, and believing in everything that Allah and His Messenger informed us of regarding the command of Paradise and Hellfire, the Hour and Paradise, and other things, and the Reckoning, and the recompense. All of this is included in the trust.
And likewise, belief in the prayer, zakah, fasting, Hajj, jihad, enjoining good and forbidding evil. All of this is included in the trust. It is necessary that these matters be performed in the manner that Allah has legislated. All of this is a trust.
And likewise, leaving the prohibitions is a trust. So it is obligatory for every Muslim to fear Allah, to perform the obligatory duties of Allah, and to beware of the prohibitions of Allah. And this action is the fulfillment of the trust.
