Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said, regarding what he quoted from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said:
A group of Bedouins came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: Do you kiss your children? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Yes.
: And the Bedouins, as we all know, are rough; the Bedouins are rough, possessing harshness and severity, especially the camel herders among them, for they have a degree of harshness and severity that makes their hearts like stones. We ask Allah for safety. They said: We do not kiss our children. So the Prophet (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) said:
Or can I do anything if Allah has removed mercy from your hearts

And in this is evidence that kissing children is out of compassion for them, tenderness toward them, and mercy for them. It is evidence that Allah the Exalted has placed mercy in the heart of man. And when Allah places mercy in the heart of man, he shows mercy to others. And when he shows mercy to others, Allah Mighty and Majestic shows mercy to him, as in the second hadith, the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Whoever does not show mercy, Allah will not show mercy to him
, we ask Allah for safety.
The one who does not show mercy to people, Allah Mighty and Majestic will not show mercy to him. And the meaning of “people” is: people who are worthy of mercy, such as the believers, the People of the Book, and those similar to them. As for the hostile disbelievers, they are not shown mercy, but rather they are killed, because Allah the Exalted said in describing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and his Companions:
forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves
[Al-Fath 48:29]
, and He said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.
[At-Tawbah 9:73]
: Allah the Exalted mentioned this verse in two chapters of the Qur'an with this wording, with wording that does not differ:
O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.
[At-Tawbah 9:73]
: He mentioned it in Surat al-Tawbah and in Surat al-Tahrim with this wording.
And He said:
nor do they tread on any ground that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they inflict upon an enemy any infliction but that is registered for them as a righteous deed
[At-Tawbah 9:120]
.
Likewise, showing mercy to livestock and animals is one of the signs of the mercy of Allah Mighty and Majestic for man, because when the heart of a man becomes soft, he shows mercy to everything that has a soul. And when he shows mercy to everything that has a soul, Allah shows mercy to him,
It was said: O Messenger of Allah, is there a reward for us in animals? He said: Yes, in every liver-bearing creature there is a reward.
.
And from compassion and mercy for the believers is that if a man is an imam for them, it is not befitting for him to lengthen the prayer for them. For this reason, he (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) said:
When one of you leads people in prayer, he should shorten it, for among those behind him are the sick, the weak, the one in need, and the elderly.
: meaning, behind him are those with excuses who need shortening.
