The Shaykh : But what is meant is that He Himself (Mighty and Majestic) is above His heavens, having risen above the Throne. Therefore, we find that this matter is innate and does not require study or effort for a person to affirm that Allah is in the sky. By mere fitrah (the innate natural disposition), a person raises his hands to his Lord when he supplicates. When he supplicates, he says, "O Lord," and the heart turns toward the sky, and the hand is raised to the sky. Indeed, even animals raise their heads to the sky.
One of the professors at our university told me about a person who visited him from Cairo during the earthquake that struck Egypt. He said that minutes before the earthquake, the animals in the animal enclosure—and what do they call it?
The student: The zoo.

The Shaykh : The zoo. They became greatly agitated, and then they began to raise their heads to the sky. Glory be to Allah! Animals know that Allah is in the sky, while some of the sons of Adam deny that Allah is in the sky, may Allah protect us from that. So the animals know and understand.
We observe some insects; if you drive them away or harm them, they stop and then raise their legs to the sky. We see this with our own eyes. This indicates that the fact that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is in the sky is an innate matter that does not require evidence, effort, or toil. Even those who deny that Allah is in the sky—we ask Allah for guidance for us and for them—if they were to supplicate, where would they raise their hands? To the sky. So glory be to Allah! Their actions contradict their belief. This false, defective belief is one from which disbelief is feared for them if they hold it. Where is Allah if He is not in the sky?
A slave girl, a female slave in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Her master wanted to free her, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Bring her." So the slave girl came.
: A slave girl who had not learned and did not know,
he asked her where God was and she replied that He was in heaven. He asked her who he was and she replied that he was God’s Messenger. He then told me to set her free, for she was a believer.
Mishkat al-Masabih 3303
.
Glory be to Allah! Those who believe that Allah is not in the sky say: "Whoever says that Allah is in the sky is a disbeliever." I seek refuge in Allah. Where is Allah, and where do you place Him? On the earth? They do not place Him on the earth. In the sky? No. Where is He? According to their claim, there is nothing. We ask Allah for guidance for us and for them.
The important point is that among our beliefs by which we profess our faith in Allah is that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is above everything, and He is the Subduer above His servants, and that He has risen above the Throne, and that the Throne is above the heavens like a dome, as if it were a tent pitched over the heavens and the earth. The heavens and the earth are nothing in comparison to the Throne.
It came in some athar (reports from a Companion or successor):
The seven heavens and the seven earths, in relation to the Footstool, are like a ring cast into a vast, open expanse of land.
, the ring of a shield is a narrow ring that a key cannot enter. If it were thrown into a vast expanse of land, what area of that expanse would it occupy? Yes, nothing.
He said:
And the excess of the Throne over the Footstool is like the excess of a vast expanse of land over this ring.
Sahih Ibn Hibban 6:55
: So Allah is greater!! It would be many times over, many times over. So He encompasses everything like a dome over the heavens and the earth. For this reason, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
His Footstool encompasses the heavens and the earth
: meaning He encompassed them. So what about the Lord (Mighty and Majestic)?
So the Lord (Mighty and Majestic) is above everything. This is our belief, which we ask Allah the Exalted that we may die upon it and be resurrected upon it. This is the belief that the people of the Sunnah and the community hold unanimously. And success is from Allah.
