The Shaykh :[Luqman 31:34] : No one knows what is in the wombs except Allah, and the fetuses in the wombs have various states:
Some are known if they exist, even if the person is in his mother's womb, and some are never known. Whether it is a male or a female is known while it is in its mother's womb, but it is not known except when Allah the Exalted creates in it the signs of maleness or the signs of femaleness. As for when it will be born? Will it be born alive or dead? Will it remain in this world for a long time or not remain except for a short period? Will its deeds be righteous or its deeds be evil? Will it be concluded with happiness or with misery? Will its provision be expanded for it or will its provision be restricted? All of this is known by no one except Allah.
[Luqman 31:34] : Meaning, what will you earn in the future? Does a soul not know what it will earn? Will it earn good or will it earn evil, or will it die before tomorrow or will tomorrow come with something that prevents work and the like? A person estimates and says: Tomorrow I will do such and such, I will do such and such, but he may not do it. So he does not know with certainty what he will earn tomorrow, but he estimates, and matters may turn out differently.
[Luqman 31:34] : A person does not know on which land he will die. Will he die in his land or in a land far from it or near it? Or will he die in the sea or die in the air? He does not know; no one knows that except Allah. So if you do not know on which land you will die, and you can go right and left, likewise you do not know when you will die. You do not know at what time you will die. Will you die in the morning? In the evening? At night? In the middle of the day? You do not know. In the near month? In the distant month? You do not know. You do not know when you will die or on which land you will die. So if that is the case, shorten your hope. Do not extend your hope for a long time. Do not say: I am young and I will remain for a long time. How many young people have died in their youth, and how many old people have lived long. And do not say: I am healthy in body and death is far away. How many people have fallen ill with a disease that kills them quickly, and how many people have been involved in an accident, and how many people have died suddenly. Therefore, a person should not extend his hope, but rather he should work for this world its due and for the Hereafter its due. He should strive for the Hereafter with its due effort, with faith in Allah Mighty and Majestic and reliance upon Him.
And Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:[Al-A'raf 7:34] : When the term of a person comes, it cannot be delayed, not even by a minute, and it cannot be advanced. Rather, it is by a predetermined, limited term that is neither advanced nor delayed. So why do you make your hope long? A person does not know when he will die and does not know on which land he will die. One of my trustworthy brothers told me that they were on a Hajj journey on camels, and there was a man with them who had his mother with him, nursing her. He lagged behind the group at the end of the night. So the people departed and walked, and he remained with his mother nursing her. When it became morning and he walked behind the group, he did not catch up with them and did not know which way they had gone, because they were in the open land in Makkah. He said: So I took a path between these mountains, and there I found a tent of hair with a few people in it. I asked them where the road to Najd was? They said: You are far from the road, but tether the camel and sit and rest, then we will guide you. He said: So I tethered the camel and dismounted my mother. He said: No sooner had she lain down on this ground than Allah took her soul. How did she come from al-Qasim to Makkah with the pilgrims, and Allah the Exalted willed that this man should be lost until he would dismount in this place? Who knows this? Except Allah Mighty and Majestic. And likewise in time, how many people have we heard of who were delayed a little, so an accident came to them and they died from it, and if they had advanced a little, they would have been safe from it. All of this is because Allah the Exalted has decreed everything with a limited term. So a person must be cautious for himself and not extend his hope, and he should work for the Hereafter as if he will die soon, in order to prepare for it. These verses all indicate that a person should shorten his hope and prepare for the Hereafter. May Allah make us and you among those who prepare for it with righteous deeds.
