The reciter: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may the prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted: "From Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was even shier than a virgin behind her veil. When he saw something which he disliked, we could perceive it on his face.
Riyad as-Salihin 683
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
The scholars said: The essence of modesty is a character trait that prompts one to abandon what is ugly and prevents one from falling short in the right of one who has a right.
And it was narrated to us from Abu al-Qasim al-Junayd (may Allah have mercy on him) who said: "Modesty is seeing the blessings—that is, the favors—and seeing the shortcoming, and a state called modesty arises between them"
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*, in the chapter on modesty and its virtue: He mentioned what was transmitted from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him):
The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had more modesty than a virgin in her tent
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 599
: The virgin is the woman who has not married, and she is the most modest of women because she has not married and has not mixed with men, so you find her modest in her chamber. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was more modest than she, but when he (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) saw what he disliked, it was known on his face; his face would change, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) was modest about it. And thus the believer should be modest, not stumbling about, not doing what causes shame, and not doing what is criticized. But if he hears what he dislikes or sees what he dislikes, he is affected. It is not manliness to be unaffected by anything, because the one who is unaffected by anything is the dull one who does not feel. But he is affected, and modesty prevents him from doing what is blameworthy or saying what is blameworthy.
And modesty must not prevent a person from asking about his religion in what is obligatory for him, because leaving off asking about the religion in what is obligatory is not modesty but weakness. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is not shy of the truth. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
The women of the Ansar were excellent women; modesty did not prevent them from gaining knowledge of the religion.
, so the women would come to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) about things that men were shy to mention. But in the matter of religion, a person must ask about his religion and not be shy. For this reason, when Ma'iz ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he came confessing to zina, saying that he had committed zina. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him. Then he came a second time and said that he had committed zina, and the Prophet turned away from him. Then he came a third time and said that he had committed zina, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him, hoping that he would repent so that Allah would accept his repentance. Then he came a fourth time. When he came the fourth time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) questioned him and said:
Are you insane? He said: No, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Do you know what zina is? He said: Yes, zina is for a man to do with a woman what is forbidden what he does with his wife that is lawful. He said to him: Did you have intercourse with her? He did not use an euphemism—he was explicit, even though this is something one is shy about, but the truth is not something one is shy about—he said to him: Did you have intercourse with her? He said: Yes. He said: Did you insert your penis into her vagina as the pestle is inserted into the mortar and the rope into the well? He said: Yes.
: This is something one is shy about, but in the matter of truth, one does not shy away.
Umm Salim came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask him, and she said:
Messenger of God, God is not ashamed of the truth. Is any washing necessary for a woman when she has a sexual dream?” He replied, "Yes, when she sees signs of liquid.” يا رسول الله إن الله لا يستحي من الحقّ، هل على المرأة من غسل إذا هي احتلمت؟ قال: نعم، إذا هي رأت الماء؟
Mishkat al-Masabih 433, 434
: This is a question that a man might be shy to ask, especially in a gathering. But Umm Salim was not prevented by modesty from knowing her religion and gaining knowledge of it. And on this basis, the modesty that prevents one from asking about what must be asked about is blameworthy modesty, and we should not call it modesty. Rather, we say that this is weakness and cowardice, and it is from Shaytan. So ask about your religion and do not be shy. As for things that do not relate to obligatory matters, modesty is better than the absence of modesty.
One of the things people have learned from the words of the earliest prophecies is, “If you don’t feel any shame, do whatever you like.”
Bulugh al-Maram 16:89
