The Shaykh : But in the matter of truth, do not be shy. Umm Salim came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask him, and she said: Mishkat al-Masabih 433, 434 This is a question that a man might be shy to ask, especially in a gathering, but shyness did not prevent Umm Salim from knowing her religion and gaining knowledge of it. Therefore, the shyness that prevents one from asking about what one must ask about is blameworthy shyness, and it should not be called shyness; rather, we should say that this is weakness and cowardice, and it is from Shaytan. So ask about your religion and do not be shy. As for matters that do not relate to obligatory matters, shyness is better than the absence of shyness. Bulugh al-Maram 16:89 And among what is contrary to shyness is what some people do now in the markets, such as obscene and bad speech, or bad actions, or the like. Therefore, a person must be shy, except in a matter that he is obligated to know, in which case he should not be shy of the truth. And success is from Allah.
