Is every person killed in a battle called a martyr?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is a person killed in a battle called a martyr?

Answer:
Whether he was killed in a battle or outside of it, he is called a martyr. If he is killed in the path of Allah, even outside of battle, and even if he lives for two, three, or four days and then dies, he is a martyr. However, if he is killed in battle, he is not washed and no funeral prayer is performed over him. But if he lives for a while and then dies, he is washed and a funeral prayer is performed over him.
Q: But it is said: So-and-so is a martyr?
The Shaykh: Yes, so-and-so is a martyr. They are martyrs by the ruling of the Shari'ah. As for the Hereafter, their affair is with Allah. But by the ruling of the Shari'ah, they are martyrs who are not washed and over whom no funeral prayer is performed. Likewise, the one killed unjustly is called a martyr, and his affair is with Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He).
