Question:
How can we reconcile His saying (Exalted is He): : [Al-Tahrim:7] with the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih Muslim 2816f.
Answer:
This is the baa' of the reward, the baa' of the reward that is negated. As for the affirmed one, it is the baa' of the cause. They enter Paradise by the causes of their deeds, and the reliance in that is upon the pardon and mercy of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He). None of you enters Paradise by his deed—meaning by way of a reward—because all of his deeds are not equivalent to a single blessing from among the blessings of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) upon him in his health, well-being, and what Allah has provided him in this world. So righteous deeds are causes; He is the One who made them causes and obligated mercy by them. He is our Lord, by His grace and His kindness (Exalted and Majestic is He), but Allah covers them with His mercy by the causes of their righteous deeds.
How can we reconcile His saying (Exalted is He): :
You are only being recompensed [for] what you used to do."
إِنَّمَا تُجْزَوْنَ مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَNone amongst you can get. into Paradise by virtue of his deeds alone. They said: Allah's Messenger, not even you? Thereupon he said: Not even I, but that Allah should wrap me in His Grace and Mercy.
