What is the Shari'ah-prescribed duration for a husband's absence from his wife and children, and does a prolonged period of travel abroad affect the marriage contract?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : I would like to ask about the Shari'ah-prescribed duration for a husband's absence from his wife and children, and whether a prolonged period of travel abroad affects the marriage contract, and whether there is a specific duration within which a traveler must return to his family?

The Shaykh : If a person's absence is due to dire necessity, such as a person who could not find a means of livelihood in his country and traveled to earn a living, he is excused.
However, if his wife demands that he return, he must return after six months.
As for if she does not demand it, and he is safe regarding her and his children, there is no blame on him for staying longer than that, and a person is the best judge of his own condition.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge, and benefit Islam and the Muslims through you. O brothers and sisters, the honorable Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, professor at the College of Shari'ah and Principles of Religion in al-Qasim, and preacher and imam of the Grand Mosque in the city of Unaizah, has answered your questions. May Allah reward the honorable Shaykh, and thank you for your attendance.
