The Limits of Prohibition in Breastfeeding

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: There are two women: the first has a son, and the second has a daughter. The result is that they were breastfed by the same woman. So, which of the siblings from the same breastfeeding is permissible for the second woman to marry? Please inform us. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer: If a woman breastfeeds a child five known feedings within the first two years, or more than five, the breastfed child becomes her son and the son of her husband, the provider of the milk. All the woman’s children, whether from the husband who provided the milk or from others, become siblings to this breastfed child. The husband’s children, from the wet nurse or others, become siblings to the breastfed child. Thus, the sisters of the breastfed child become his maternal uncles, and the brothers of the husband—the husband who provided the milk—become his paternal uncles. The woman’s father becomes the grandfather of the breastfed child, and her mother becomes his grandmother. The father of the husband who provided the milk becomes the grandfather of the breastfed child, and his mother becomes his grandmother. This is based on the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, regarding those who are prohibited in marriage in Surat al-Nisa:
your [milk] mothers who nursed you, your sisters through nursingوَأُمَّهَاتُكُمُ اللاَّتِي أَرْضَعْنَكُمْ وَأَخَوَاتُكُم مِّنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ
[Al-Nisa: 23], and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Breast-feeding makes unlawful (for marriages) the same things that blood tie make unlawful.يحرم من الرضاع ما يحرم من النسب
Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam)
, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Suckling applies only (to infants) during the first two years (of their life).لا رضاع إلا في الحولين
Bulugh al-Maram 8:198
, and what is established in Sahih Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: “It was among what was revealed in the Qur’an that ten known feedings prohibit marriage, then they were abrogated by five known feedings. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away while the matter remained as such.” Al-Tirmidhi narrated it with this wording, and its original source is in Sahih Muslim.
