Breastfeeding that results in prohibition

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
My cousin’s daughter and I were breastfed by my mother before she completed two years of age. The breastfeeding occurred in a single sitting. She nursed until she was about to empty the breast. The breastfeeding happened by mistake at night. When my mother, who was nursing her, realized it, she pulled the breast away. She did not recall anything about the girl’s repeated attempts to nurse; did she keep trying, or did she continue until my mother pulled the breast away? This happened only once. Is it permissible for me to marry my cousin’s daughter? Please advise us, may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
For breastfeeding to result in prohibition, it must amount to five suckles, even if they occur in a single sitting. The condition is that the child holds the breast, sucks the milk, and the nurse knows that he has sucked the milk and that it has gone into his stomach. If he continues, that counts as one. If he releases the breast and separates from it, then returns, that counts as two, and so on until the five are completed while he is within the two-year period. This is based on what is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
One suckle or two suckles do not prohibit marriage, nor does one or two licks, nor does one or two sucks.لا تحرم الرضعة ولا الرضعتان، ولا الإملاجة ولا الإملاجتان، ولا المصة ولا المصتان
It was narrated by Muslim in the Sahih.
It is also established from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: “Among what was revealed in the Qur'an were ten known suckles that prohibit marriage, then they were abrogated by five known suckles. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away while the matter remained as such.” Muslim narrated it in his Sahih, and Imam al-Tirmidhi in his Jami' with this wording. In another wording, it says: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away while it was still among what was recited in the Qur'an.”
In another hadith of Aisha, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sahlah:
Breastfeed Salim five feedings and you will be forbidden to himأرضعي سالمًا خمس رضعات تحرمي عليه
Therefore, five suckles are required, whether in one sitting, multiple sittings, or more than that. However, the minimum is five in one sitting, or over days, or over months. Once five are completed, the child becomes the son of the nurse, the brother of her children, the son of her husband, and the brother of her husband’s children. The woman’s brothers become his maternal uncles, and her sisters become his maternal aunts. The man’s brothers become his paternal uncles, and his sisters become his paternal aunts, and so on. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Breast-feeding makes unlawful (for marriages) the same things that blood tie make unlawful.يحرم من الرضاع ما يحرم من النسب
Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam)
And Allah said in the Qur'an (Exalted and Majestic is He):
your [milk] mothers who nursed you, your sisters through nursingوَأُمَّهَاتُكُمُ اللَّاتِي أَرْضَعْنَكُمْ وَأَخَوَاتُكُمْ مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ
[Surah al-Nisa: 23].
As for the situation that occurred, where he sucked the breast and then she released it, and she did not know anything about it except this one suckle, this does not prohibit marriage. This does not prohibit marriage. This is considered one suckle because he sucked the breast and continued until she realized he was not her son, so she pulled the breast away from him. She did not verify five suckles for him. Therefore, he does not become her son, and it is not considered valid breastfeeding until five suckles are completed: he sucks the milk and it goes into his stomach, then he separates, then he returns and sucks the milk and it goes into his stomach, then he separates, then he returns, and so on, whether in one day, several days, several sittings, or several months. Yes.
