Breastfeeding that establishes prohibition
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
From Jeddah, we received this message from the questioner (F. S. S), who says: Your Eminence, what is the amount of breastfeeding that establishes prohibition? What is the amount of a single suckling? And must the sucklings be known?
Answer:
The sucklings that establish prohibition must be five, or more, and they must be known, each one distinct, based on what is established in the authentic hadith from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: “Among what was revealed in the Qur'an was: ten known sucklings establish prohibition. Then they were abrogated by five known sucklings. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away while the matter remained as such.” Muslim narrated it in his Sahih, and al-Tirmidhi narrated it, and this is his wording.
And it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said to Sahlah bint Sahil:.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 1940Sahih (Darussalam) So the breastfeeding that establishes prohibition must be five or more, while the infant is within the two-year period, while the child is within the two-year period. Each suckling is known: the child sucks the breast and swallows the milk, then separates. This is one. Then he returns and suckles and swallows the milk, then separates. This is the second. And so on. It must be that he sucks the milk, swallows the milk, and this is known. Then he returns to the suckling after this. If he sucks the milk and leaves the breast to move from one breast to another, or to breathe and rest, this is one suckling.
The presenter: O Shaykh (may Allah preserve you), they are in one location.
The Shaykh: Even in one sitting, even in one day, even in one sitting, five sucklings with intervals between them. He drinks the milk, breathes, leaves the breast, or moves from one breast to another, or rests, or his mother gets up for a need and returns, or something similar to that.
The presenter: May Allah reward you and bless you.
