We are attaching to Your Eminence a copy of what was recorded by us, with the endings corrected, regarding a fatwa on breastfeeding, and also attaching the petitioner’s (B. D. S.) submission for your review and to inform us of what is incumbent upon the petitioner.
May Allah guide you, keep your steps steady, and preserve you as a treasure for Islam and the Muslims, and may Allah protect you. Peace be upon you.
President of the Courts of the Tabuk Region

Answer: And upon you be peace, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, after that:
Based on what Your Eminence mentioned in the attached recording, regarding the aforementioned woman’s (Z) admission to you that she does not know whether she breastfed five times or not, I issued a fatwa to him that the aforementioned breastfeeding is not to be relied upon, and the rulings of breastfeeding are not established by it, and his wife remains in his marriage; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Suhaylah bint Suhayl to breastfeed Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah, five times, and thereby she became forbidden to him, and due to the statement of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): “It was among what was revealed in the Qur’an that ten known breastfeedings make a person forbidden, then they were abrogated by five known breastfeedings, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away while the matter was still as such,” as narrated by Muslim in his Sahih, and al-Tirmidhi in his Jami', and this is his wording.
So I hope you will notify everyone of the aforementioned fatwa. May Allah reward your efforts and multiply your reward.
And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
Grand Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
