Question:
The listener Yahya Ghurawi sent a question saying: I am a person who has a daughter who was breastfed once by a woman who was pregnant. Does this single breastfeed suffice to establish the rulings that follow from breastfeeding? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
A single breastfeed does not result in prohibition, nor does it establish the rulings of breastfeeding; rather, its existence is like its non-existence, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Ibn Majah 1940Sahih (Darussalam) And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) to Sahlah bint Sahil when she wanted to breastfeed Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah, he said to her: And it is established from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: "Among what was revealed in the Qur'an were ten known breastfeeds that prohibit [marriage], then they were abrogated by five known breastfeeds, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away while the matter remained as such." Imam Muslim narrated it in his Sahih, and al-Tirmidhi in his Jami', and this is the wording of al-Tirmidhi. These hadiths indicate that a single breastfeed does not result in prohibition, but rather five known breastfeeds within the two years are necessary; based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Bulugh al-Maram 8:198 And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Bulugh al-Maram 8:197 So two conditions are necessary for the breastfeeding that results in prohibition:
The first is that it be within the two years before weaning.
The second condition is that the breastfeeds be five, or more, where the child sucks the breast, breastfeeds, breastfeeds, then releases the breast after the milk reaches his stomach, then returns to breastfeed until the milk reaches his stomach... this is the second, and so on, in one sitting, or in multiple sittings, in one day, or in multiple days. This is the correct opinion among the scholars' views, and it is what the aforementioned hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicate. Yes.

Breastfeeding once or twice
لا تحرم الرضعة، ولا الرضعتانBreastfeed him five breastfeeds, and you will be prohibited to him
أرضعيه خمس رضعات تحرمي عليهSuckling applies only (to infants) during the first two years (of their life).
لا رضاع إلا في الحولينThe suckling that makes marriage unlawful is that which reaches the intestines (i.e. nourishes the child), and is taken before (two years) time of weaning.
لا رضاع إلا ما فتق الأمعاء، وكان قبل الفطامThe first is that it be within the two years before weaning.
