Question:
I ask of your eminence the exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-Nur: 35]?
Answer:
The meaning of this noble verse according to the scholars is that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is the one who illuminated them; so all the light in the heavens and the earth, and on the Day of Resurrection, was from His light, Glorified and Exalted is He.
And light is of two kinds: created light, which is what exists in this world and the Hereafter, in Paradise, and among people now, such as the light of the moon, the sun, and the stars, as well as the light of electricity and fire; all of it is created, and it is from His creation (may Allah have mercy on him).
As for the second light: it is not created, but rather it is from His attributes (may Allah have mercy on him). And Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, and by His praise, is the Creator with all His attributes, and everything other than Him is created; so the light of His Face (peace and blessings be upon him), and the light of His Essence (may Allah have mercy on him), both are not created, but rather they are an attribute from His attributes, Exalted and Majestic is He.
And this great light belongs to Him, Glorified and Exalted is He, and is not created, but rather it is an attribute from His attributes; like His hearing, His sight, His hand, and His foot, and other of His great attributes (may Allah have mercy on him). And this is the truth upon which the people of the Sunnah and the community have proceeded.
