The Ruling on Loyalty to Relatives Who Are in a State of Shirk (Associating Partners with Allah)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A father and his sons were in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, then one of his sons learned and recognized the truth and informed them, saying: "This is forbidden and this is lawful." The father’s response to him was: "We found our fathers upon this, and we are like the tribe of so-and-so." Is it permissible for the son who practices the oneness of Allah to show loyalty to his father and his remaining brothers, or not?

Answer:
If a person recognizes Islam and Allah guides him to accept it, he has no right to show loyalty to the people of shirk (associating partners with Allah) or to have affection for them, even if they are his closest relatives. This is based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindredلَا تَجِدُ قَوْمًا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ يُوَادُّونَ مَنْ حَادَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلَوْ كَانُوا آبَاءَهُمْ أَوْ أَبْنَاءَهُمْ أَوْ إِخْوَانَهُمْ أَوْ عَشِيرَتَهُمْ
[Al-Mujadila 58:22]
the verse [Surat al-Mujadilah: 22]. However, he must call them to Allah, encourage them to do good, and be patient in doing so, so that perhaps Allah may guide them through his hands, in which case he will have a reward like theirs.
