The Ruling on Fulfilling a Vow of Obedience

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
My wife vowed to herself that she would fast six days of every month if her son obtained his primary school certificate. He obtained that certificate about a year ago, and she began fasting from that date. However, she felt regret about it and felt exhausted due to her preoccupation with raising her children and her household affairs, especially during the summer days.
So what is your opinion, may Allah reward you with good, regarding this vow? Does she continue fasting, or does she seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him? It is known that she vowed to fast six days monthly for the rest of her life.

Answer:
She must fulfill her vow; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “
Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Him, and whoever vows to disobey Allah, let him not disobey Him.من نذر أن يطيع الله فليطعه، ومن نذر أن يعصي الله فلا يعصه
Sunan Ibn Majah 2126Sahih (Darussalam)
,” which Imam al-Bukhari recorded in his Sahih. And Allah has praised those who fulfill their vows in His saying, Exalted is He: “
They [are those who] fulfill [their] vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread.يُوفُونَ بِالنَّذْرِ وَيَخَافُونَ يَوْمًا كَانَ شَرُّهُ مُسْتَطِيرًا
[Al-Insan 76:7]
” [Surah al-Insan, verse 7]. There is no blame on her if she fasts them separately if she did not intend to fast them consecutively. If she did intend to fast them consecutively, then she must fast them consecutively.
And we ask Allah to help her with that and to magnify her reward. We advise her and other Muslims not to return to making vows; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “
Do not make vows, for a vow has no effect against fate; it is only from the miserly that it is a means by which something is extracted.لا تنذروا؛ فإن النذر لا يرد من قدر الله شيئا، وإنما يستخرج به من البخيل
Mishkat al-Masabih 3426
,” which is agreed upon as authentic.
And success is from Allah.
