The Ruling on Fulfilling a Vow of Obedience
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: J. R. from the Eastern Region sent us a question stating: My wife made a vow to fast six days of every month if her son obtained his primary school certificate. He obtained that certificate about a year ago, and she began fasting from that date. However, she felt regret and experienced fatigue due to her preoccupation with raising her children and managing her household, especially during the summer days. What is your opinion, may Allah reward you with good, regarding this vow? Should she continue fasting, or should she seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him? It is known that she vowed to fast six days monthly for the rest of her life.
A: She must fulfill her vow; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Ibn Majah 2126Sahih (Darussalam) which Imam al-Bukhari recorded in his Sahih. Allah has praised those who fulfill their vows in His saying, Exalted is He: [Surah al-Insan: 7]. There is no blame on her if she fasts them separately, provided she did not intend to fast them consecutively. If she did intend to fast them consecutively, she must fast them consecutively. We ask Allah to help her with that and to magnify her reward. We advise her and other Muslims not to return to making vows; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Mishkat al-Masabih 3426 It is agreed upon that it is authentic.
And success is from Allah.
A: She must fulfill her vow; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Him, and whoever vows to disobey Allah, let him not disobey Him.
من نذر أن يطيع الله فليطعه ومن نذر أن يعصي الله فلا يعصهThey [are those who] fulfill [their] vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread.
يُوفُونَ بِالنَّذْرِ وَيَخَافُونَ يَوْمًا كَانَ شَرُّهُ مُسْتَطِيرًاDo not make vows, for a vow has no effect against fate; it is only from the miserly that it is a means by which something is extracted.
لا تنذروا فإن النذر لا يرد من قدر الله شيئًا وإنما يستخرج به من البخيلAnd success is from Allah.
