What is the meaning of: “Whoever eats onion or garlic, let him not approach our mosques”?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
There is a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he said:
Whoever eats onion, garlic, or leek, let him not approach our mosques for three days, for the angels are offended by what the sons of Adam are offended by.من أكل بصلًا أو ثومًا أو كراثًا فلا يقربن مساجدنا ثلاثة أيام فإن الملائكة تتأذى مما يتأذى منه بنو آدم
or as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. Does this mean that the person who eats any of these things is not permitted to pray in the mosque until that period has passed? Or is eating them considered not permissible for one who is obligated to attend the congregational prayer?

Answer:
This hadith and other authentic hadiths of similar meaning indicate that it is disliked for a Muslim to attend the congregational prayer as long as a noticeable odor emanates from him that offends those around him; whether that is due to garlic, onion, leek, or other things with a bad smell, such as smoke, until the odor disappears. As for specifying a period of three days, I do not know of any basis for that.
