He who wants to eat any of these, should cook them till their odour dies out.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
This chapter mentioned by the author (may Allah have mercy on him) in *Riyad al-Saliheen* is among the rulings concerning mosques. It is the prohibition of one who has eaten onions, garlic, leeks, or the like from approaching or entering the mosque until the smell has gone away. Then he mentioned hadiths, among them:
The hadith of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him)
That he delivered a sermon to the people on Friday and said: "You eat from these two trees, onions and garlic, and I do not think them, or I do not think them, anything but foul." أنه خطب الناس يوم الجمعة فقال إنكم تأكلون من هاتين الشجرتين البصل والثوم وما أراهما أو وما أراهما إلا خبيثتين
meaning two things foul in smell. And he reported
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when someone entered having eaten from them, ordered him to be taken out to al-Baqi' أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان إذا دخل أحد وقد أكل منهما أمر به فأخرج إلى البقيع
and al-Baqi' is close to the mosque, as is well known, close to the Prophet's Mosque. But he sent him to al-Baqi' as a discretionary punishment. Otherwise, it would have been sufficient to take him out of the mosque door. But for the sake of the discretionary punishment, he sent him to this place which is somewhat far. However, 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: whoever wants
Whoever eats them من من أكلهما
meaning whoever wants to eat them
Let him cook them فليمتهما طبخا
let him cook them, for if he cooks them, the smell goes away and the benefit is obtained.
It is derived from this hadith that onions and garlic are not forbidden; it is permissible for a person to eat them. But if he eats them, he must not enter the mosque, nor pray with the congregation, nor attend a lesson of knowledge, because the angels are harmed by their foul smell.
Likewise, the scholars said that if a person has a smell of armpits, or a smell in the head, or a smell in the mouth, or a foul smell in the armpits or the like, he must not approach the mosque until he removes this smell, because the operative cause is the same: the harm to the angels by foul smells.
If someone asks: If a person uses something that removes the smell, is it permissible for him to enter? We say: Yes, it is permissible for him to enter if he eats something that completely removes the smell and no smell comes out from the stomach, for there is no harm, because the ruling follows its operative cause in existence and absence.
If a person asks: Is it permissible for a person to eat them so that he does not attend the mosque? We say: No, this is forbidden. It is not permissible for a person to resort to dropping an individual obligation by any means. But if he eats them because he buys them, we say: eating is permissible, but do not approach the mosque until the smell has gone away. And success is from Allah.
