The ruling on the family of the deceased sitting in their homes to receive condolences

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is wailing considered to be the gathering of the family of the deceased in a house, and their receiving people for three days to make it easier for the relatives?

Answer:
Wailing is not permissible, but if one sits in the house to receive people’s condolences, there is nothing wrong with it. One should sit in his house at appropriate times so that his relatives and other condolence-givers can visit him; there is nothing wrong with that. However, they should not make a feast of food. The family of the deceased should not slaughter animals for people or prepare food for the deceased; no, this is a religious innovation with no basis. But if the owner of the house sits at appropriate times, such as after Maghrib or 'Isha', or during the Duha prayer or other times, for his brothers to visit him and offer condolences, so that it does not become burdensome for them, or if they offer condolences to him on the road, or at the cemetery, or in the mosque, that is sufficient.
