The ruling on the deceased's family staying in the house for condolences accompanied by slaughtering

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The sister (S. H. M.) from Libya sent a message containing a collection of questions from her and her sisters. In one of the questions, they say: In our country, when a person dies, the deceased's relatives stay at the place of condolence for a period of seven days, not leaving the place of condolence, and acquaintances visit the place of condolence for three days, and animals are slaughtered throughout that period. What is the ruling on that? May Allah reward you with good, and we ask for advice and guidance.

Answer:
There is no fixed duration for offering condolences; rather, it is the Sunnah for the believing man and the believing woman to offer condolences in any situation, whether on the road, or in the house after death, before the funeral prayer and after it, and before the burial and after it. There is no fixed duration for this, nor a fixed place; rather, the believer offers condolences to his brothers in Allah, and the believing woman offers condolences to her sisters in Allah, as well as to her relatives and neighbors. As for their staying in the house for seven days, or three days, this has no basis in the religion. Rather, they should go out for their needs and their work, and whoever meets them on the road, or at their place of work, or in the house, offers them condolences. And if they sit in the house at the usual time for sitting, and their brothers come to them and offer condolences, there is no harm in that. However, preparing a feast for people by slaughtering animals for the sake of the deceased is a religious innovation from the practices of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, and it has no basis. Jarir ibn 'Abd Allah al-Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him) the noble Companion said:
We used to consider gathering at the deceased's home and preparing food after the burial to be part of wailing.كنا نعد الاجتماع إلى أهل الميت، وصنعة الطعام بعد الدفن، كنا نعده من النياحة

So it is not permissible for the deceased's family to prepare food for people because of the deceased. But if their neighbors or relatives give them food as a gift, there is no harm in that. Rather, it is recommended that the neighbors, or the relatives, prepare food for the deceased's family, because they are occupied with the calamity. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did this. He ordered his family (peace and blessings be upon him) to prepare food when the news of the death of his cousin Ja'far ibn Abi Talib from Sham reached them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his family:
Prepare food for the family of Ja’far, for there has come to them that which is keeping them busyاصنعوا لآل جعفر طعامًا فقد أتاهم ما يشغلهم
Sunan Ibn Majah 1610Hasan (Darussalam)
. So if the neighbors, or the relatives, prepare food for the deceased's family, this is prescribed. And if the deceased's family invites their neighbors, and the guests who stayed with them, to eat, and they eat, there is no harm in that; because there may be a lot of food, and it needs people to eat it. So if they invite their neighbors, or some of their relatives, to eat with them, there is no harm in that.
And likewise, if a guest stayed with them, if a guest stayed with the deceased's family, and they prepared food for him, there is no blame in that; because this is not for the sake of the deceased, but for the sake of the guest. May Allah guide them all. Yes.
