The ruling on consoling the family of the deceased for three days while providing food

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We return to Sudan via a message we received from one of our brother listeners. He says: Your brother from the people of the Sunnah and the community, our brother has eight questions. His first question is: Is it prescribed to console the family of the deceased in a specific place for three days after the burial, while providing food?
The answer: There is no basis for this. As for condolences, there is no specific place for them; one may offer condolences on the road, in the mosque, or at the cemetery before or after the burial, and there is nothing wrong with any of this. However, preparing food for the people, for those offering condolences and others, is not permissible, as it is a practice from the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. But if they sit in their home and the people offering condolences come to them without them preparing food for the people, there is nothing wrong with that. If someone comes to the house to offer condolences, offers them, and then leaves in the evening or the day, there is nothing wrong with this. However, preparing food for the people to honor them when they come to offer condolences has no basis, and it is a practice from the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. Jarir ibn Abdullah al-Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
We considered gathering with the family of the deceased and preparing food after the burial to be wailing.كنا نعد الاجتماع إلى أهل الميت وصنعة الطعام بعد الدفن من النياحة
As for their neighbors or relatives preparing food for them and sending it to them, there is nothing wrong with this; it is prescribed. This is because when the news of the death of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of Mu'tah reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said to his family:
Prepare food for the family of Ja’far, for there has come to them that which is keeping them busyاصنعوا لآل جعفر طعامًا فقد أتاهم ما يشغلهم
Sunan Ibn Majah 1610Hasan (Darussalam)
So, if the relatives or neighbors prepare food for the family of the deceased and send it to them during the days of calamity because they are occupied, this is recommended and there is no blame in it. The blame lies in the family of the deceased being the ones who prepare the food. But if they prepare food for themselves, or if guests come to them and they prepare food for them, it does no harm. However, they should not intentionally do anything for the sake of the deceased or follow a custom for the sake of the deceased. But if they prepare their own food when no one has brought them anything and no one has given them anything, there is nothing wrong with preparing their food. Or if guests come to them and they increase their food for the sake of the guests, there is nothing wrong. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
