The Shaykh : Then he mentioned the second hadith of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the story of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) shaving his head during the Farewell Pilgrimage. For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), during the Farewell Pilgrimage, when he spent the night at Muzdalifah and prayed Fajr, and sat making supplication until it was very bright, and he set out before the sun rose, and he reached the Jamarat al-Aqabah when the day had advanced and the sun had become hot, he stoned the Jamarat on the Day of Sacrifice and went to his lodging, so he called for the barber and he shaved his head. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to the right side, so the barber started with the right side. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to leave the hair on his head as mentioned before, so his head had a lot of hair. He started with the right side and shaved it, then he called Abu Talhah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) and gave him all the hair from the right side. Then he shaved the rest of the head and called Abu Talhah and gave it to him and said: so he distributed it. Some of the people got one hair, some got two, and some got more, according to what was available. Why? For the sake of seeking blessing with this noble hair, the hair of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And the fact that Abu Talhah was singled out by the Messenger with the entire right side indicates that some people are singled out by a special quality that Allah grants them, even if there were among the Companions those better than him, such as Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthman, and 'Ali, and many of the Companions were better than Abu Talhah. But the favor of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is given to whom He wills. The Companions used to seek blessing with the hair of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), his clothes, and his sweat, but others did not seek blessing with his hair, his clothes, or his sweat. Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her), one of the wives of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), had some hairs from the hair of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and she placed them in a small box, meaning a brick of silver, and made it of silver to honor the hair of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). So when people had a sick person, they came to her, and she would pour water on the hair and move it, then give it to the sick person, and he would be healed by the permission of Allah, by the blessing of the hair of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). But this, as I said, is not for others, for the Companions did not seek blessing with the hair of Abu Bakr, who is the best of the nation after the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), nor with the hair of 'Umar, nor with that of any other Companion. Likewise, those below them do not seek blessing with his hair, his sweat, or his clothes. That is specific to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The point of the hadith of Anas is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicated to the barber to start with the right side. So if you perform Hajj and you want to shave or shorten your hair, start with the right side. And likewise, if you shave a normal shave, start with the right side. And success is from Allah.
