Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
This is the remainder of the hadith narrated by Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), regarding the story of Abu Talhah when his young son died. In one of the narrations, it says:
That Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), when Abu Talhah came after the death of the young child, said to him: "What do you think if a group of people lent a loan to some people, and then they came asking for it, would they be allowed to prevent them from it?" He said: "No."
: When the owner of the loan says, 'Give me what you borrowed from me,' they do not prevent him. She said:
So consider your son as a loan.
: Meaning that children are a loan in our view, and they belong to Allah (Mighty and Majestic); whenever He wills, He takes them. She gave him this example so that he would be convinced and seek reward from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). This indicates her intelligence (may Allah be pleased with her), and that she was a wise, patient woman who sought reward. Otherwise, a mother is like a father in that she is afflicted with grief over her child just as the father is, and she may even be more grieved due to her weakness and lack of patience.
In this hadith is the blessing of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) supplication, as he had nine or ten children, all of whom recited the Qur'an, by the blessing of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) supplication.
In it is also a karamah (a miracle granted to a righteous person) for Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), because Abu Talhah had gone out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, and Umm Sulaym was with him after she became pregnant. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the journey, labor pains came to her, meaning: the delivery pains came to her before they reached Madinah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not like to surprise his family, meaning: he did not like to enter upon them at night without informing them of his arrival. So Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) called upon his Lord and said:
O Allah, You know that I love that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) does not go out on a journey except that I am with him, and he does not return from a journey except that I am with him, and I have been afflicted with what you see.
: He said this to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), confiding in his Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He). Umm Sulaym said:
So I did not feel what I used to feel before.
: Meaning the labor pains became light for her, and it was as if she was not in labor. Umm Sulaym said to her husband Abu Talhah:
So he set out, and he entered the city with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When they arrived in the city, she gave birth...
: In this is a karamah for Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), where Allah lightened the labor pains of his wife by his supplication. Then when she gave birth, Umm Sulaym said to her son Anas ibn Malik, who was the brother of this child who was born, his brother from his mother, she said:
Narrated Umm Salamah, Ummul Mu'minin: The clothing which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) liked best was shirt.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4025Sahih (Al-Albani)
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would take the date, chew it in his mouth, and then place it in the child's mouth, because in that there are two benefits: The first benefit is the blessing of the saliva of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) used to seek blessing from the saliva of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and from his sweat. It was even their custom that in the morning, after he prayed Fajr, they would bring vessels containing water. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would dip his hands in the water and rub his hands in the water. The boys would come with this water and then go with it to their families to seek blessing from the trace of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
And the Companions, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed wudu' (the ablution for prayer), they almost fought over his wudu', over the virtue of the water to seek blessing with it. They would take from his sweat and take from his hair. Until at the home of Umm Salamah, one of the wives of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and one of the Mothers of the Believers, there was a small silver container, like a small jar, containing hairs from the hair of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The sick would seek healing with it, or they would seek healing, meaning they would bring two or three hairs from the hair of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), place them in water, and stir them in order to seek blessing from this water. But this was specific to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
The second benefit of the dates with which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) would place in the children's mouths is that dates contain goodness and blessing, and they have a benefit for the stomach. So if the first thing that reaches the child, or the first thing that reaches his stomach, is dates, that is good for the stomach. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) placed it in his mouth and supplicated for him with blessing. The point of this hadith is that Umm Sulaym said to Abu Talhah:
...and seek the reward for your son from Allah...
And success is from Allah.
