Explanation of Riyad al-Salihin-53a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted in the context of the hadiths in the book on the Etiquette of Food "from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
If a person mentions the Name of Allah upon entering his house or eating, Satan says, addressing his followers: 'You will find no where to spend the night and no dinner.' But if he enters without mentioning the Name of Allah, Satan says (to his followers); 'You have found (a place) to spend the night in, and if he does not mention the Name of Allah at the time of eating, Satan says: 'You have found (a place) to spend the night in as well as food

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
This hadith was mentioned by the author al-Nawawi in Riyad al-Salihin in the context of the Etiquette of Food, from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
If a person mentions the Name of Allah upon entering his house or eating, Satan says, addressing his followers: 'You will find no where to spend the night and no dinner.' إذا دخل الرجل بيته فذكر الله عند طعامه قال الشيطان لأصحابه: إنه لا مبيت لكم ولا عشاء
Riyad as-Salihin 729
Because a person mentions Allah, and the mention of Allah the Exalted upon entering the home is to say:
Bismillah we enter, and Bismillah we exit, and upon Allah our Lord we rely. O Allah, I ask You for the good of the one who enters and I ask You for the good of the one who exits. بسم الله ولجنا وبسم الله خرجنا وعلى الله ربنا توكلنا اللهم إني أسألك خير المولج وأسألك خير المخرج
This dhikr is upon entering the house, whether at night or during the day. As for the dhikr upon dinner, it is to say:
In the name of Allah بسم الله
So, if he mentions Allah inside the home upon entering and mentions Allah when eating his dinner, Satan says to his companions: You have no lodging here and no dinner. Because this home and this dinner are protected by the dhikr of Allah (Mighty and Majestic); He has protected it from the devils. And if he enters and does not mention the name of Allah, Satan says: You have secured the lodging. And if the food is presented to him and he does not mention the name of Allah, he says: You have secured the lodging and the dinner. In this is an encouragement that a person should, when he enters his home, mention the name of Allah. The dhikr transmitted for this is what you have heard
Bismillah we enter, and Bismillah we exit, and upon Allah our Lord we rely. O Allah, I ask You for the good of the one who enters and the good of the one who exits. بسم الله ولجنا وبسم الله خرجنا وعلى الله ربنا توكلنا اللهم إني أسألك خير المولج وخير المخرج
Then he should use the miswak, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), when he entered his home, the first thing he would begin with was the miswak, then he would greet his family. As for dinner, he would say: Bismillah. And by doing so, he guards himself from the accursed Satan, both in lodging and in dinner. If he mentions the name of Allah upon entering but not upon dinner, Satan shares with him in his dinner. If he mentions the name of Allah upon dinner but not upon entering, Satan shares with him in the lodging but not in the dinner. And if he mentions the name of Allah upon entering and upon dinner, then Satan has neither lodging nor dinner. And Allah knows best.
The student : If he says Bismillah upon entering?

The Shaykh : Perhaps, if Allah wills, it is sufficient for him if he says Bismillah when he enters his home; perhaps it is sufficient, if Allah wills.
