The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Chapter on the prohibition of pairing two dates or the like when a group is eating, unless one has the permission of one's companions. Jabalah ibn Sahim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were afflicted by a year of famine with Ibn al-Zubayr, and we were provided with dates. Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would pass by us while we were eating and say: Do not pair them, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited pairing. Then he would say: Unless a man asks his brother's permission. Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. Chapter on what one who eats and does not get full should say and do. Wahshi ibn Harb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Messenger of Allah, we eat and do not get full. He said:
Perhaps you eat separately." The Companions replied in affirmative. He then said: "Eat together and mention the Name of Allah over your food. It will be blessed for you." فلعلكم تفترقون، قالوا: نعم، قال: فاجتمعوا على طعامكم واذكروا اسم الله يبارك لكم فيه

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
These are two chapters mentioned by al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) in *Riyad al-Salihin*. The first is regarding the prohibition of pairing two dates or the like of what is eaten individually when one is with a group, unless one has the permission of one's companions. For example, something that is customarily eaten one by one, like dates. If you are with a group, do not eat two dates together, because this harms your brothers who are with you by eating more than they do, unless you ask permission and say, "Do you permit me to eat two dates at once?" and they permit you, then there is no harm. Likewise, what is customarily eaten individually, such as some small fruits that people pick up one by one and eat, a person does not combine two unless he has the permission of his companion with him, for fear that he will eat more than his companion eats. However, if a person is alone, there is no harm in eating two dates together or two of what is eaten individually together, because he does not harm anyone by doing so. Except if he fears for himself from choking or a lump in the throat, for the common people say: "Whoever makes the mouthful large will choke". So if he fears that if he eats two dates together or two of what is eaten individually together he will choke, he should not do it, because that harms himself. And the self is a trust with you; it is not permissible for you to do what annoys it or harms it. Then the author mentioned what Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he prohibited pairing, meaning that a person pairs two dates, unless he asks the permission of those with him, then there is no harm.
