The Shaykh : And among the hadiths is the hadith of al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during the expedition to Tabuk dismounted from his camel and took the water vessel. The water vessel is a container for water, similar to what people used to know as the "matarah" in the past. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the vessel and went until he was hidden in the darkness of the night, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most modest of people, and he did not like anyone to see him while he was sitting to relieve himself, even if they did not see his private parts. This is part of perfect etiquette: when you wish to relieve yourself, move away from people until you are hidden from them. This is not merely so that they do not see your private parts, because covering the private parts is obligatory and it is not permissible to expose oneself before people, but this is beyond that, meaning it is better that a person not be seen while relieving himself. This is part of the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), for his guidance is the most perfect of guidance. Then he wanted to perform ablution, and he had a woolen robe with narrow sleeves on, which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing because the weather was cold, as Tabuk is close to the Levant. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had this robe on. When he performed ablution and washed his face, and wanted to pull his arm out of the sleeve, it was tight, and it also appears to have been thick, so his hand could not get out, and he pulled it out from the bottom and washed it (peace and blessings be upon him). When he wanted to wash his feet, al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah reached out to remove his leather socks, reasoning that since the Messenger had not wiped over the sleeves because they were tight, he had not wiped over them, but rather pulled his hand out from the bottom to wash it. So al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah thought that the leather socks were like that and that they should be removed in order to wash the feet. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to him: Sahih al-Bukhari 206 So he wiped over them, meaning he put them on while in a state of purity, so he wiped over them. In this hadith are several benefits, among them: that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is a human being, and what befalls humans in natural matters befalls him; he gets cold as people get cold and gets hot as people get hot. For this reason, Mu'awiyah saw him once, and he had unbuttoned the buttons of his shirt, because, and Allah knows best, he was hot, so he unbuttoned them. Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) thought that this was part of the Sunnah, but it is not part of the absolute Sunnah, but it is part of the Sunnah if it provides relief for the body, because everything that lightens the burden on the body is good. So if a person is hot and wants to open the top button and the one next to it, there is no harm; this is part of the Sunnah. But without a reason, it is not part of the Sunnah, because if it were part of the Sunnah, then buttoning the shirt would be futile with no benefit, and the Islamic religion contains nothing futile; it is all serious. And among the benefits of this hadith: that there is no blame on a person for avoiding what harms him from heat or cold, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did. In fact, it is better for a person to avoid what harms him.
