The reader: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Chapter on the permissibility of lying on one's back. It was narrated from Abdullah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) lying on his back in the mosque, with one of his legs placed over the other. Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. And it was narrated from Jabir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: 'The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he prayed the Fajr prayer, would sit in a squatting position in his place until the sun rose beautifully.' This is an authentic hadith, narrated by Abu Dawud and others with authentic chains of narration. And it was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: 'I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the courtyard of the Ka'bah sitting with his knees drawn up, his hands like this.' And he described the posture of sitting with his knees drawn up with his hands, which is the squatting position. Narrated by al-Bukhari. And it was narrated from Qaylah bint Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: 'I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sitting in a squatting position. When I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) so humble in his sitting, I trembled with fear.' Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi. And it was narrated from al-Shurayd ibn Suwayd (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me while I was sitting like this, having placed my left hand behind my back and leaning on the heel of my hand. He said:Sunan Abi Dawud 4848Sahih (Al-Albani) Narrated by Abu Dawud with an authentic chain of narration."

This chapter, which al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) established in *Riyad al-Salihin*, is regarding sleeping on one's back. It has been mentioned previously that it is better for one who wishes to sleep to sleep on the right side, and it has been mentioned previously that sleeping on one's stomach is not recommended except out of necessity. What remains is sleeping on one's back, and there is nothing wrong with this; that is, there is nothing wrong with a person lying on his back, provided he is safe from the exposure of his private parts. If he fears that his private parts might be exposed such that if he raises one of his legs, his lower garment would rise and he is not wearing trousers, then it is not recommended. But if he is safe from the exposure of his private parts, then there is nothing wrong with it. And a fourth matter remains, which is sleeping on the left side, and this is also permissible. So, sleeping on the back is permissible, sleeping on the left side is permissible, sleeping on the right side is better, and sleeping on one's stomach is not recommended except out of necessity. As for sitting, all types of sitting are permissible. There is nothing wrong with a person sitting in a squatting position, like sitting like this, and there is nothing wrong with sitting with the knees drawn up, meaning raising the thighs and lower legs and placing the hands folded on the lower legs like this; this is also permissible, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) sat in this position. The only sitting that is disliked is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) described as the sitting of those against whom anger has been invoked, which is placing the left hand behind the back and placing the palm of the hand on the ground and leaning on it. For this sitting, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) described it as the sitting of those against whom anger has been invoked. However, if one places both hands behind the back and leans on them, there is nothing wrong with it. And if one places the right hand, there is nothing wrong with it. What the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described as the sitting of those against whom anger has been invoked is placing the left hand behind the back and placing its inner side, i.e., the heel of the hand, on the ground and leaning on it, meaning leaning on it. This is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described as the sitting of those against whom anger has been invoked. And Allah grants success.
