The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the manner of greeting: “From Asma bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by in the mosque one day, and a group of women were sitting, so he gestured with his hand in greeting. Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: It is a good hadith. This is understood to mean that he (peace and blessings be upon him) combined the verbal greeting with the gesture, and this is supported by the fact that in Abu Dawud’s narration it says: ‘So he greeted us.’ And from Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Those who are nearest to Allah are they who are first to give a salutation. إن أولى الناس بالله من بدأهم بالسلام
Sunan Abi Dawud 5197Sahih (Al-Albani)
Abu Dawud narrated it with a good chain, and al-Tirmidhi narrated it similarly and said: It is a good hadith. And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The rider should first greet the pedestrian, and the pedestrian the one who is seated and a small group should greet a larger group يسلم الراكب على الماشي، والماشي على القاعد، والقليل على الكثير
Sahih Muslim 2160
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. And in al-Bukhari’s narration:
and the younger person greets the older person والصغير على الكبير

These are hadiths regarding some of the etiquettes of greeting, which al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned in *Riyad al-Salihin* in the section on the etiquettes of greeting. We have previously discussed some of them, including the hadith of Asma bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a group of women in the mosque and gestured to them in greeting, greeting them and pointing with his hand. Al-Nawawi said: “This is understood to mean that he combined the greeting with the gesture”, because greeting by gesture alone is prohibited. The greeting must be verbal: “As-salamu alayk” if addressing one person, and “As-salamu alaykum” if addressing a group. However, if a person is far away, or deaf, or there is a lot of noise around him, or something similar, then he combines the gesture with the words, saying “As-salamu alaykum” while gesturing. In the hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) greeted the women, because the potential harm is completely absent. Otherwise, a non-mahram man who is not a close relative of a woman does not greet her, because of the potential for fitnah, especially a young man with a young woman. Therefore, a man does not greet a woman, and a woman does not greet a man. But if a man is known for his righteousness and passes by women who are gathered, such as those who gather in the mosque or in a lesson or something similar, then there is no harm in greeting them, because the potential harm is absent, and the mosque is a place where everyone enters and exits. However, if a person passes by a young woman in the market and greets her, that is fitnah, so he does not greet the woman. Similarly, if he enters his home and there are women who have visited his family, there is no harm in greeting them, because the potential harm is absent. As for what is feared to cause fitnah, we have a legal principle: repelling harm is more important than seeking benefit.
