Explanation of Riyad al-Salihin-62a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the virtue of reciting the Qur'an: "From Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
Envy is not justified but in case of two persons only: one who, having been given (knowledge of) the Qur'an by Allah, recites it during the night and day (and also acts upon it) and a man who, having been given wealth by God, spends it during the night and the day (for the welfare of others. seeking the pleasure of the Lord).
Sahih Muslim 815a
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim"
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said in the chapter on the virtue of the Qur'an in the book *Riyad al-Salihin*:
In what he transmitted from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Do not wish to be like anybody except in two cases
Sahih al-Bukhari 7316
This is because people wish for what others have in matters of this world and matters of the Hereafter. You will find, for example, some people wishing for this man when Allah has given him wealth, children, family, palaces, cars, and the like. They say, "This is the fortunate one, the fortunate one, this is the one to be envied," and the like. They envy or wish for what Allah has given some people in terms of health—may Allah have mercy on you—what Allah has given them in terms of health and sound constitution, and the like. They say, "This is the fortunate one." They wish for him because he has honor and status among his people; if he speaks, he is heard, and if he acts, he is followed. They say, "This is the fortunate one." But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) clarified that the fortunate one who is envied is the one who has obtained one of these two matters: The first:
one who, having been given (knowledge of) the Qur'an by Allah, recites it during the night and day
Sahih Muslim 815a
He acts upon it, thinking about what Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said about prayer, and he says: "Allah said:
Establish prayer
" so he establishes it. What did He say about zakah? He said: "Allah says:
Give the zakah
" so he gives it. What did Allah say about parents? Allah the Exalted said:
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good
[An-Nisa 4:36]
. What did He say about maintaining family ties?
And those who join that which Allah has ordered to be joined
[Ar-Ra'd 13:21]
, so he maintains his family ties. What did He say about neighbors? Allah the Exalted said:
the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away
[An-Nisa 4:36]
, and so on. So you find him acting upon the Qur'an during the hours of the night and the hours of the day. This is the envy, and it is the gain, and it is the fortune, because this remains.
And the second is a man to whom Allah has given wealth: meaning He gave him richness, so he became rich. He spends the wealth during the hours of the night and the hours of the day: he spends it in the path of Allah, in what pleases Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Whatever pleases Allah, he spends his wealth in it: in building mosques, in charity for the poor, in supporting the mujahideen, in supporting the distressed, and the like. The important thing is that he finds nothing that brings him closer to Allah except that he spends his wealth in it, night and day. He is neither miserly nor extravagant. He is not miserly to the point of being stingy, nor extravagant to the point of being excessive and increasing. Rather, he spends it for Allah, by Allah, and in Allah, sincere to Allah, seeking His help, and following His Shari'ah. This is the one who is envied.
As for the one who has something of this world, a share of this world, wealth in which he enjoys himself as a beast enjoys its fodder, and then it departs from him, this one is not envied, nor is he envied for this. Because this wealth is perishing or is lost from him. But the one who spends his wealth in the path of Allah, this is the one who is envied.
And in this is evidence that it is obligatory for a person to act upon the Qur'an during the hours of the night and the hours of the day, always making all his actions based on the Qur'an, following the guidance of the Qur'an. And it is obligatory for the one to whom Allah has given wealth to fulfill its right and perform its obligation, and to spend it where its spending is good. And Allah is the One who grants success.
