The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
He said (may Allah have mercy on him): "Chapter on the recommendation of gathering to recite the Qur'an:
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah (mosques) and recite the Book of Allah and they learn and teach the Qur'an (among themselves) there would descend upon them tranquility and mercy would cover them and the angels would surround them and Allah mentions them in the presence of those near Him
Sahih Muslim 2699a
Muslim narrated it."

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: "Chapter on gathering to recite the Qur'an": By this he means that it is recommended (mustahabb) for people to gather to recite the Qur'an, as is found now in the Qur'an memorization circles in the mosques. This is of that type; they gather to learn the Qur'an and teach it. This is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) encouraged, as narrated by Abu Hurayrah from him (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), who said:
and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah (mosques) and recite the Book of Allah and they learn and teach the Qur'an (among themselves) there would descend upon them tranquility and mercy would cover them and the angels would surround them and Allah mentions them in the presence of those near Him
Sahih Muslim 2699a
: These are four things that follow from this gathering. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
No people get together in a house of the houses of Allah
Sunan Abi Dawud 1455Sahih (Al-Albani)
And the houses of Allah are the mosques. Allah the Exalted said:
in mosques which Allah has ordered to be raised and that His name be mentioned therein; exalting Him within them in the morning and the evenings (37) [Are] men whom neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah and performance of prayer and giving of zakah
[An-Nur 24:36-37]
: Allah attributed these places to Himself as an honor and exaltation, because they are the place of His remembrance, the recitation of His speech, and drawing near to Him through prayer. Otherwise, He (Glorified and Exalted is He) is above His Throne, above His heavens; He does not reside in any of His creation, nor does any of His creation reside in Him (Exalted and Majestic is He). But this attribution is for honor. The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) said: "That which is attributed to Allah is of two types. The first is an attribute that does not exist except in a subject; these are among the attributes of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), such as the might of Allah, the power of Allah, the speech of Allah, the hearing of Allah, and the sight of Allah. These are attributes that do not exist except in an attributed one, so they are among the attributes of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). The second is something distinct from Allah (Mighty and Majestic), a created thing. This is not among the attributes of Allah, but is attributed to Him (Mighty and Majestic) by way of honor and respect, such as: the mosques of Allah, the houses of Allah, the she-camel of Allah, and as He said in the Qur'an regarding Adam:
and breathed into him of My [created] soul
[Al-Hijr 15:29]
Similarly regarding Isa ibn Maryam, for the spirit is something distinct from Allah (Mighty and Majestic), separate, created among His creations, but attributed to Him by way of honor and respect."

And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Reciting the Book of Allah
: The recitation of the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is divided into three categories: recitation of the wording, recitation of the meaning, and recitation of action:
As for the recitation of the wording, it is known; one reads this and this and this and this. It is of two types. The first type: the reader reads a page or two pages, then the others follow him, reading the same thing he read. This usually happens in teaching.
The second, the second type of verbal recitation: the reader reads a page or two pages, then the second person reads a page or two pages after him, different from what the first one read, and so on. If someone says: This second type causes some of the reward to be missed, because what this one read, this one did not read, it is said: It is not missed, because the listener is like the reader; he has his reward. The evidence for this is the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) in Surat Yunus, in the story of Musa (peace be upon him) when he invoked against the family of Fir'awn:
Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment." ربنا اطمس على أموالهم واشدد على قلوبهم فلا يؤمنوا حتى يروا العذاب الأليم
[Yunus 10:88]
: The one saying this is Musa, as in the beginning of the verse:
And Moses said, "Our Lord, indeed You have given Pharaoh and his establishment splendor and wealth in the worldly life, our Lord, that they may lead [men] astray from Your way. Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment."
[Yunus 10:88]
, Allah the Exalted said:
[Allah] said, "Your supplication has been answered." So remain on a right course and follow not the way of those who do not know." قال قد أجيبت دعوتكما فاستقيما ولا تتبعان سبيل الذين لا يعلمون
[Yunus 10:89]
The one invoking is one person, but the scholars said: Harun was listening and affirming his invocation, so the invocation was for both of them.
As for the recitation of the meaning: it is that these people study the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and understand its meaning: what is the meaning of this verse? If it is something understood through the Arabic language, that is known. If it is something not understood except by referring to the words of the people of knowledge and the exegetes, they refer to that, to the words of the scholars and exegetes regarding the verse, because some verses have legal realities that are not known through the Arabic language.
The righteous Salaf did not read ten verses until they understood them and the knowledge and action contained in them. They said: "So we learned the Qur'an, and knowledge and action all together."
As for the third category of recitation: it is the practical recitation, and this is the greatest purpose of the Noble Qur'an, as He said the Exalted:
[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.
[Sad 38:29]
: Acting upon what came in the Qur'an, by believing in what Allah informed, performing what He commanded, and staying away from what He prohibited. This is the practical recitation of the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
but calmness (sakinah) comes down to them
Sunan Abi Dawud 1455Sahih (Al-Albani)
: Tranquility is something that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) casts into the heart, so it becomes calm, certain, and settled. There is no anxiety, doubt, or suspicion in it. It is calm and reassured. This is one of the greatest blessings of Allah upon the servant, that He descends tranquility into his heart so that he is reassured, not anxious, not doubting, satisfied with the decree and destiny of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) with Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in His decree and destiny. If hardship strikes him, he is patient and waits for relief from Allah. If prosperity strikes him, he is grateful and praises Allah for it. Reassured, settled, at rest. This tranquility is a great blessing. We ask Allah to descend tranquility into our hearts and your hearts. And Allah the Exalted said:
It is He who sent down tranquillity into the hearts of the believers that they would increase in faith along with their [present] faith
[Al-Fath 48:4]
: So it is among the causes of the increase of faith.
calmness (sakinah) comes down to them, (Divine) mercy covers them
Sunan Abi Dawud 1455Sahih (Al-Albani)
: "Enveloped them" means: covered them. And "enveloping" means covering, as He said the Exalted:
And [by] the night when it covers
[Ash-Shams 91:4]
meaning it covers the earth with its darkness.
And mercy enveloped them.
that is: the mercy of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). So it envelops them and surrounds them, and is for them like a comprehensive cover for everything they need from the mercy of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
And the angels surrounded them.
that is: they surrounded them, listening to the remembrance and being witnesses over them.
And the fourth
and Allah remembers (mentions) them before those who are with Him.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3378Sahih (Darussalam)
: Allah the Exalted mentions them in the highest assembly. This is like His saying the Exalted in the Qudsi Hadith:
if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assembly better than it
Sunan Ibn Majah 3822Sahih (Darussalam)
, The important thing is that this hadith indicates the virtue of gathering upon the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). And success is from Allah.
