The Ruling on Gathering to Recite the Qur'an

Machine translationRead the Arabic original

The first question of Fatwa No. ( 3861 ):

Q1: What is your ruling, may Allah preserve you, regarding a man who gathered a number of people in his home, and they studied whatever portion of the Qur'an was available to them, then they supplicated to Allah for themselves and for the Muslims, then he invited them to eat a meal he had prepared in advance for them, and then they departed.
From the same question: The host distributed separate portions of the Qur'an to the guests so that they would all read, each individually, what was written in the portion in front of him. After they had all finished, one of them supplicated for themselves and for the Muslims, and they considered that, in their totality, they had completed the recitation of the mushaf as a means of seeking blessing.

First: Gathering to recite the Qur'an and study it, where one person reads and the others listen, they discuss what was read and understand its meanings, is prescribed and a nearness to Allah that He loves, and He rewards it with a great reward. It was narrated by Muslim in his Sahih and by Abu Dawud , from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah (mosques) and recite the Book of Allah and they learn and teach the Qur'an (among themselves) there would descend upon them tranquility and mercy would cover them and the angels would surround them and Allah mentions them in the presence of those near Himما اجتمع قوم في بيت من بيوت الله يتلون كتاب الله ويتدارسونه بينهم إلاَّ نزلت عليهم السكينة، وغشيتهم الرحمة، وحفتهم الملائكة، وذكرهم الله فيمن عنده
Sahih Muslim 2699a
. Supplication after completing the recitation of the Qur'an is also prescribed, except that one should not make it a constant habit, nor adhere to a specific formula as if it were a followed Sunnah; for that was not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but rather some of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did it. Likewise, inviting those present at the recitation to food is permissible, as long as it does not become a custom after the recitation. Second: Distributing portions of the Qur'an to those present at the gathering so that each of them reads a hizb or several hizbs for himself is not necessarily considered a completion of the Qur'an by each of them. Their intention of reading solely for seeking blessing is deficient, for the recitation is intended for nearness to Allah, preserving the Qur'an, reflecting upon it, understanding its rulings, taking a lesson from it, and attaining reward and recompense, and training the tongue to recite it... among other benefits.
And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
